POLITICAL ANIMAL?....Since the word is already out, I guess I might as well confirm it: Yes, I have sold out to The Man™ and will soon be blogging for cold, hard cash.
Which is pretty cool, isn't it? What's even better is that I'll be blogging for the Washington Monthly,
a magazine I've admired for 20 years, ever since a conservative friend
of mine introduced me to it right after I graduated from college. (He's
even more conservative these days, though, so I guess it didn't have
much effect on him.)
Not much is going to change, though. There will be a new URL, but
it's still going to be me blogging about whatever I feel like, although
hopefully with more opportunity to do a bit of reporting here and there
and to make a few contacts I otherwise couldn't.
The switch will happen sometime in the next day or two. I'll have
more later as soon as all the technical details are worked out.

Congratulations - this is really one of the best blogs out there and it's great to see it hit "the big time."
Good move. We need more people like you and Bill Press representing California in the media.
Way to go Kevin! Your dogged and even-handed pursuit of the facts
are exactly what we should be able to expect from mainstream
journalists. Perhaps you can help "change the culture." Best wishes
Fantastic, Kevin. Is this going to be your full-time job? Because that would be pretty cool.
Well deserved! Congratulations, and best of luck.
*Now* we know why the catblogging was dropped by Big Media Kevin!
See if you get my two feline's vote in November... ;-)
Couldn't have happened to a better blogger.
What is the feline version of "dogged"?
Nice! Congrats -- a well-earned reward!
What is the feline version of "dogged"?
Now, could you be a *little* subversive and work in the occasional
cat blogging entry? A touch of eclecticism always helps differentiate
journalists, after all.
Good job, Kevin. You deserve it. Few professional journalists can do as good a job as you. So you ought to be getting paid.
Congrats. While I am more familiar with the Charles Peters version
of the Washington Monthly than the new regime's, I'd guess you'll make a
Actually, I really was getting a little tired of catblogging, but I
admit that you have ferreted out the other reason I gave it up. It
doesn't really fit the image of a Serious Washington Magazine, does it?
Congratulations, Kevin, on going from Calpundit to Washpundit! Is it
just my imagination or were they just waiting for you to quit the
Friday cat blogging before they sealed the deal?
Will the new site have an RSS feed? That's the big question.
By the way, if you want to reduce spam, why not make it harder for
spambots to crawl your page? As it is, the clink-here-for-my-email
option makes you a sitting duck.
Congratulations and best of luck. Most of all, however, don't pull
any punches. Just make believe that you're still blogging for the fun
What is the feline version of "ferreted"?
Congratulations! You’re the reason I give some many right wing-nut posters headaches.
(so that is what you were doing in Washington last month)
Just so long as they don't make you jettison your principles...
like Friday the 13th catblogging.
Bravo, bravo. Bang a Drum.
Congrats. A recognition of quality. Be proud.
But thank all the little people. And the cats.
YOU GODDAMN SELLOUT!
Well, someone had to say it.
Seriously, good work, and we'll keep reading.
Good for you! I like the market, so I respect 'selling out'. :)
So, now that Jasmine and Inkblot can be fed a higher grade of cat
food (thanks to Big Media(tm) buckolas), will we be treated to images of
their ever-widening furry bellies again?
You got it made, you stiff. I hear these commercial bloggers can rake
in, like, a monthly salary in the high two figures. Remember, when
things get rough, put the cats back in. We're suckers for cat photos.
Congrats. Maybe you can do that feature and sell them on a monthly cat-blog feature later...
Did you make sure that Washington Monthly had reached out to qualified female and minority candidates before you took the job?
(Just keeping up my rep. Good for you.)
Congrats and run Kevin, run! ;-)
"Washington" Monthly with a California (OC, hotbed of Republicans of
the loonier kind) perspective? Hmmm. Weren't you in marketing?
Mazeltov, Kevin. Lots of great content at Washington Monthly, you'll fit right in.
Damn, fake Al got there first.
You DO have comments on the new site, right? Me and my friends email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org need somewhere to go.
Out of curiosity, Kevin, does this mean the end of calpundit.com or
will it live on for light stuff and general silliness a la
Isn't that Josh Marshall's old haunt? Invading east coast territory, huh? You best come correct G! Congrats!
Awesome! Congratulastions, Big Media Kevin.
So, like, do we get tickets to the inauguration parties or what?
Congtrats, Mr. Drum. You're worked hard for it.
It's a sad day for moronic brownshirt trolls...
Ah, and now we know the real reason he ended Friday Catblogging at last!
Seriously, though, I've been reading Calpundit since the days it was subtitled "Sunny Thoughts from Sunny Orange County".
And we'll all read you at your new internet home.
Re catblogging; It doesn't really fit the image of a Serious Washington Magazine, does it?
Au contraire, Serious Washington Magazines have been out of touch
with the true America because they have lost contact with the bond
between cats & blogreaders.
Congrats, Kevin! The Washington Monthly has been my favorite
political mag for eons, so I think it's great that they'll be paying you
to do this!
I've always thought you were better than 99% of the pundits out
there. Now it'll be great to see what an institutional stamp can do for
an already terrific blogging career.
Indeed, good job. I hope you'll be keeping up the current site, a la Matt Y., as another poster suggested.
Congratulations from the right
Well, this just goes to show what happens when you write really
well...and you're smart & reasonable and all that other good
Best Wishes for Your Every Success,
Kevin, got this "eulogy" from your interview with P.K.?
Congratulations - I look forward to more great things from you. (Never heard of WM, I guess I'll have to look them up.)
Good news! And Congratulations!
Congratulations! I just started reading your blog a short time ago, so I'm looking forward to even more good posts! :)
I would'nt do it unless they let you Cat Blog!
I'll add more congratulations! You have a great blog -- one of two
or three I read on a daily basis. WM shows great judgment.
You earned it. I don't even know you, but I'm proud of you.
My best regards.
Wow, that's too cool for school! I gotta get me one of dem jobs...
Give me a break, Mr. Drum. You didn't seel out to anything.
The Man can came begging for a real writer 'cause he knows he's getting his ass kicked with those floosies we call journalists.
I'm absurdly pleased about this. Congratualtions, Mr. Drum!!
Congratulations! Well-deserved success.
We object! Bring back Friday cat-blogging! Don't sell out, Kevin!
I've been reading your blog for over a year. I always knew you were
one of the best. So I must ask: "What took them so damn long!?"
Finally the bride. I'm sure you'll grab more mentions along with TPM and Kaus with The Man behind you. Very happy for you.
Congratulations on a well-deserved promotion.
Well deserved. Congratulations!
Now when I turn people on to your blog I don't have to waste three
minutes explaining the "cal" part of your sites name. (I live in Ohio.)
Congratulations from Canada and Times New Roman Online. If anyone out
there deserves recognition for "outing" the blogosphere it's Kevin
Drum. Well deserved, Kev.
Congratulations, Kevin! Your writing has been in the "professional"
category for quite some time now, and I'm happy that you'll be
recognized for it with the thing that counts even more than bloggers'
terrific news, keep it up
Congrats; it was only a matter of time before you started to get paid for what you do so well.
Why 'Political Animal?'
Hey Kevin! Congratulations! That's awesome.
WOW! You won't forget all the little people who have been reading
your blog for so long will ya? I bookmarked AM as soon as I sat down
this evening. You are one of the best! AM is very lucky.
Way to go, Kevin. I still want the cats, though. So what if it's a "Serious Magazine"?
Dear God, is Kaus really a "contributing editor" at WM? This oughtta be fun...
Congratulations, Kevin. You deserve it!
Congratulations! I guess the Koufax awards will need to create a professional blogger category soon.
It couldn't happen to a better blogger. My enthusiastic congratulations.
Kudos Kevin. This Canadian thinks it's great news -- and definitely not a sellout but a well-deserved step up.
This is the second best paid blogging news I could imagine! (Sadly, "Kaus fired" remains elusive.) Congrats.
Swell. When do we get the first Viagra endorsement?
(I kid, I kid.....congrats!)
"Opposing a judicial appointee partly based on his ethnicity :
EGREGIOUSLY AND UNFORGIVABLY WRONG. However, the left simply cannot
I don't think Estrada was opposed "partly based on his ethnicity," in
fact, the memo points out that it would be dangerous to do so.
Congratulations Kevin! Couldn't have happened to a better blogger!
This will getme reading the rest of the Washington Monthly online,
which I always intend to look at but rarely do. You, I always get to.
Hooray! Kevin Drum has a new beat.
I feel better about "the press" already.
Will there be a good comments system on the new blog?
Yes, but will we still get the occasional cat blogging? Need our regular fixes!!!
I'm shocked by this blatant display of liberal bias on the part of Washington Monthly.
Congratulations Kevin; well-deserved.
Au contraire! my dear sir. Catblogging is one of those essential,
quirky, charming things that sets blogging apart from the mainstream
media. Just cause they're paying you doesn't mean you have to get all
serious and establishment on us. Let the establishment pay you, but stay
outside the establishment. Washington Monthly could use a cat or two.
Good news always has me "feline" groovy! Congratulations, Kevin!
I would congratulate you because you certainly did all that legwork
pal and put in those long hours but....NO KITTIES - no comment...
Well maybe just this little tidbit - (It reminds me of this book I
once “partly” read about doing what you love and the money will
come-must have been something to that theory, you think Kevin?)
But - but I’m telling you Kevin, without Inkblot’s adorable mug
gracing the blog-a-sphere every Friday, I mean really - who do you
really think is the real STAR here?
Inkblot make you a star Kevin and the thanks you give him. It was
NOTHING – well I think it’s very cold blooded not to give credit where
credit is due pal.
Without Friday Cat blogging you are nothing Kevin – always remember that.
JUST YOU WAIT! When it comes time to sign the contract – than you’ll
see – it’s really Inkblot that the people essentially wanted. You’ll
see... You’ll see.
Oh what the heck!!! Congratulations Kevin! You are certainly the man for the job just don't ever, ever forget the feline face that got you there pal.
Congratulations but I hope you didn't have to agree to absolutely no cat blogging.
Do you get to harass Scottie at the WH briefings? Helen Thomas needs some help.
Congratulations. WM has been a must-read for 30 years. Don't forget those Survivor reviews!
Now go pump up the economy with your signing bonus.
Totally unoriginal comment... Congrats! I predicted this back in September!
I hope this translates into TV appearances in the coming months. The
left is in dire need of well-informed and thoughtful commentators to
offset the legions of inane lip-smackers that pass for "pundits".
Congrats! That explains why no more Friday Cat Blogging....
Could you just change over to Friday House Member Blogging? Post your
favorite House Member of the week? They would be kinda close to your
fuzzballs....a little hairy, whiskers, slightly overweight, and just a
tad bit lazy.
Congratulations, and best of luck. I look forward to your future columns with the Monthly.
Will you still have Pay Pal?
Wow. Well, now we can all sigh 'we knew him when....' and state authoritively that 'nice guys' do NOT 'finish last.'
Congrats, Kevin. Washington Monthly chose well. So did you. I look forward to reading your new... paid... work!
Kevin Drum, capitalist roader.
Much congratulations ! You earned it !
Congrats Kevin my man!
It's frightening to think that you once asked me for a blogroll link!
I look forward to reading you in a new place.
The best part is i bet Kevin still gets to write from his comfy chair
at home in sweats, unshaven, dissheveled and all that. What a coup!
And he earned it on merit, having built his blog and following himself
from the ground up.
What a wonderful story!
But I will miss the 'old' pure calpundit
And this comments section was the among the best. Maybe it's time to mosey over to the Poor Man....
Seriously though, you owe your fame and fortune to Jasmine and Inkblot.
May the force be with you.
Don't forget the new picture with shoes you actually wear!
Ka-ching. Go for it Kevin. But don't forget about us little people.
Congratulations. Doing what you enjoy and legitimizing the blogosphere in journalism - fantastic news.
But what about Friday Catblogging? I missed the cats last week. Please don't go all "professional".
Your blog is one of the best-written on the web. There's so much
crap out there. And thanks to linking to Eric Zorn of the Chicago
Tribune -- got to a lot of Illinois stuff I wasn't aware of via him.
I look forward to your upcoming evisceration on mediawhoresonline.
Even more important people will return your calls.
Beware the Dark Side of the Force!
Ah, Kevin, we hardly knew ye!
so much for your cred, Kevin.
one of the nice things about blogging is that you can be
irresponsible in your opinions, and the only person subject to criticism
Now, everything you write will subject Washington Monthly to
criticism. And since that is a publication that you esteem, you will
inevitably be far more cautious in what you say.
We already have one Josh Marshall (that isn't a dig at Josh). I'm not certain we need another one.
Congratulations - you run a great site.
"We already have one Josh Marshall (that isn't a dig at Josh). I'm not certain we need another one."
Heck, we need at least a half dozen of them, what are you talking about? Put one or two on the NYT while you're at it.
Does this mean you'll start sucking like Matthew Yglesias did when he started getting paid?
Congratulations! You are "liberalism with a human face," to paraphrase somebody.... I hope you make boodles and have a blast!
Congratulations! Always good to see someone "break on through to the other side!"
- insert air guitar
Congrats. You've earned it.
Aha, the Democrats have found yet another loophole in McCain-Feingold.
Congrats. Blogs are changing it around. Have seen your blog mentioned
at a lot of liberal blogs, Prom6, rayne today, usndemvet.com.
Congratulations, Kevin, this is wonderful news - and of course very richly deserved, too! all best wishes, Patrick
A native of the Golden State makes the big-time.
Congratulations, but now you will have to get something to say, apart from nuancing. Or maybe not. Seriously, Congratulations!
It is dangerous to confuse children with angels.
Congratulations - you have now great site
