March 05, 2004 NAVEL GAZING....Are blogs influencing the outside world? Absolutely. The Guardian reports today that its most popular story of the past week was loaded ten times as much as its #2 story. Blogs accounted for the difference:
But what about me? I linked to that story, not those other guys. Sigh. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Perhaps James Joyner inadvertantly provides the explanation by pointing to a study that claims that lots of bloggers get their ideas from other blogs without attributing them. Bastards. I immediately went to the Blog Epidemic Analyzer and typed in my URL, and sure enough, people are stealing my ideas! Between May 1-21 of 2003, Calpundit was referenced 96 times explicitly and 67 times implicitly — i.e., without attribution. Clearly, something must be done. Suitable punishments should be submitted in comments. Posted by Kevin Drum at March 5, 2004 03:06 PM | TrackBackComments
It's punishment for the censorship of cat blogging! Posted by: Ryan at March 5, 2004 03:12 PM | PERMALINKFirst off, Make 'em spend a weekend with Al or Charlie!!! Posted by: Keith G at March 5, 2004 03:15 PM | PERMALINKPerhaps Kevin should advertise on blogs that use him without attribution, telling readers to come to Calpundit for the real thing. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense if this blog doesn't actually generate revenue, of course. Posted by: bad Jim at March 5, 2004 03:18 PM | PERMALINKThe only punishment I can think of is a not insignificant dose of humility for Calpundit. I think he could use it. Posted by: A fan at March 5, 2004 03:19 PM | PERMALINKKevin, you're just not getting the credit you deserve. I think it's coming though. When I first hit the blogs, I was mainly hanging around Atrios, Daily Kos, and Agonist (with some Counterpin thrown in). That was around war time. Then, I wasn't too impressed with the blog over here. It's funny how, as time goes by, trends can change. Personally, I think your blog is overall one of the best, and one of only a handful I visit regularly. Does that mean I love everything you say? No. But you spotlight a lot of the right things, and the thread discussions here at CalPundit are light years ahead of what you find elsewhere. Keep up the good work. This is definitely one of the best blogs around. Posted by: jimm at March 5, 2004 03:19 PM | PERMALINKAnd consider the plagiarism as flattery and proof of viability. Posted by: jimm at March 5, 2004 03:20 PM | PERMALINKNot that Kevin actually has to drum up business, of course. On a more serious note, Lately I have noticed links and sometimes just references to you in a variety of blogs. I found out about calpundit thanks to a link in Slate a year ago. "Patience young Luke, soon you will feel the force...." Posted by: Keith G at March 5, 2004 03:20 PM | PERMALINK....Every liberal with a weblog linked to the story, and when a story is trawled by the blogs traffic goes up; exponentially. Very few, if any, websites could handle an exponential increase in traffic. (Unless it was very short lived). Sigh. Nobody understand the true scope of the word exponential. As for what you can do about theft of your ideas, I say start sending out 'Cease-and-Desist' letters to the offenders. Next, get a jacket with 'BIAA' (Blogging Industry Assoc. of America), and start showing up at server rooms and collocation points, demanding servers be turned over to you. Hell, it worked for the RIAA -- just declare yourself a part of the executive branch, and live large of the proceeds from confiscated property. :-) Posted by: Timothy Klein at March 5, 2004 03:28 PM | PERMALINKYou go Kevin.I wouldnt know what a blog is if it were'nt for you. "Sigh. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." Hey, Kevin, I'd be glad to, err, uh.....nevermind. Sigh. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. I feel your pain. Heck, I usually don't even get invited to the wedding... Posted by: NTodd at March 5, 2004 03:35 PM | PERMALINKOh, and the Kevin doesn't need to drum up business pun was just plain bad. Ok? Posted by: Rook at March 5, 2004 03:36 PM | PERMALINKAbsolutely, blogs are the best! I have leanred much from the gloggers here, such as why it would be indefensible to vote for John Forbes Kerry. I think you gotta go nader, or Bush. Here's what I see as bloggers main problems with Kerry: "President Kerry. Please, spare us." "He's going to turn out to be just like George Bush." "John Kerry is part of the corrupt political culture in Washington." "It appears that his word is no good." "I'm just incensed by his hypocrisy." "This is not the person we need to head the Democratic Party. I think Senator Kerry is clearly not the person to carry the banner of the Democratic Party because he has acted so much like a Republican." "Senator Kerry apparently supports the kind of corrupt fund raising, politically corrupt fund-raising mechanisms that George Bush has also employed." "We are not going to beat George Bush by nominating someone who is the handmaiden of special interests." "A special-interest clone." "A candidate of no principle." Bloggers unit, Nader! Posted by: kesier at March 5, 2004 03:40 PM | PERMALINKYes, I also didn't understand why you didn't get a Koufax award. Also, the influence of this blog is felt by other blogs. I remember a joking entry by Tacitus, saying that most of his liberal audience, and a significant increase in readership, was when you would mention and link to him. He made some funny comment about it, but I don't remember it... Posted by: JC at March 5, 2004 03:41 PM | PERMALINKKevin, why should you get credit for making a link? The person breaking the story is the only one that deserves any real credit. Why should another blogger have to say, "I heard on instapundit, who heard on calpundit, who heard on the drudge report that the Guardian wrote a fascinating article on Global Warming and the Bush administration." Bloggers don't typically make news or even break news, they just spread the news. With that being said, you have certainly been branching out of late and trying to do more real journalism with interviews and such, and you should be commended for that. -Brad Posted by: brad at March 5, 2004 03:45 PM | PERMALINKJust in case it wasn't absolutely clear, I was kidding. Calpundit has been in the top ten of the Blogosphere Ecosystem for over a year now, which is far better than I ever expected. I have absolutely no complaints about being noticed. It was just a bit of Friday afternoon humor. Posted by: Kevin Drum at March 5, 2004 03:47 PM | PERMALINKHere's a good link for bloggers who want to understasnd the underhanded nature of the Kerry/Heinz team. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/opinion/s_169770.html Cheer up, Kevin. The Austin Chronicle knows who you are. Oh, and in keeping with the attribution memo, I got that link from Carl Zimmer at The Loom. Posted by: Linkmeister at March 5, 2004 03:54 PM | PERMALINKsheerahkahn, if you put your blog's link into your comments instead of your mailing address it might make it out of swaddling clothes more quickly. :) Posted by: Linkmeister at March 5, 2004 03:56 PM | PERMALINKI have no idea what the post is about, so pay attention to me ! Kevin -- When I'm doing links, I try to make sure they're attributed by, at the very least, linking to you. (That way you know about it, it shows up in your trackbacks.) My fellow bloggers (and my good friends) at the NFZ have different ideas about attribution, but they all seem to do so in some form or another. And I really enjoy your blog, and you made my day when you commented on one of my entries at mine, and I never did say thank you properly. (I was in shock -- it was "Calpundit commented on my blog!") :) -kat Posted by: katster at March 5, 2004 04:08 PM | PERMALINKKevin have you been paying attention to what Howard Stern is doing?Easter lemming is. Posted by: smalfish at March 5, 2004 04:11 PM | PERMALINKFirst Friday post-cat-blogging. I don't like it. Kevin, please bring back the cats!! :) Posted by: DCAl at March 5, 2004 04:13 PM | PERMALINKKesier, you are a fucking idiot. When you can quote something from a real publication, as opposed to a right-wing circle jerk, get back to us. I bet you can find cool sounding stuff on Drudge, too. The article was laughable. It's pretty much OH MY GOD! They fund ENVIRONMENTAL EXTREMISM! They're a secret cabal that sacrifices babies and forces nuns to become lesbians! HIDE YOUR CHILDREN! LIBERALS EXIST! When in danger, when in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout! Posted by: Gaska at March 5, 2004 04:13 PM | PERMALINKHey, Kevin, if they didn't understand that you were doing a fake rant, let them wallow in their lack of light-homouredness (that a word?). Personally, I believe a suitable punishment would be a blogopublic censorship of the offending blogs, letting them know that "To steal from a college textbook is research; to steal from Calpundit is plagiarism". Posted by: Coriolanus at March 5, 2004 04:14 PM | PERMALINKKevin, relax. I think you're a little on edge because, um, you've got no cybercats around to mellow you out. Plus, look at the text: "These celebrity bloggers include" That suggests the following list includes some--but not all--of the celebrities. It would have been worse if they named you buy name. Because then you wouldn't be cool anymore. As it us, just us cool kids know about you. And a gazillion other people who know how to work links. Posted by: emptywheel at March 5, 2004 04:14 PM | PERMALINKHave a special blogroll for them -- Sincere Flatterers. or Derivative Resources :) Heck. Even I, with a week-old blog have seen my ideas echoed elsewhere a day or two later -- and it just *has* to be coincidence. Scorpio Punishment -- forced to peddle Calpundit gear on their site. Posted by: dmbeaster at March 5, 2004 04:16 PM | PERMALINKSpeaking of influential blogs, THIS ! THANK GOD FOR KRAUTHAMMER: Charles Krauthammer has never written a dumb column, to my knowledge. Even on emotional subjects such as civil marriage, he brings to the debate a calm reasoning that wins the respect of his opponents as well as his supporters.
I suggest a blue taffeta dress, with a baby's breath and calla lily bouquet. Posted by: dick tuck at March 5, 2004 04:21 PM | PERMALINKHey, check out that link Kesier posted - it's really, really funny! "What makes the pairing with Tides troubling is that organization's secretive funneling of cash from private foundations... to extreme left-wing activist groups whose interests include... anti-war protests, opposition to free trade, banning of firearms, abolition of the death penalty, unlimited abortion rights, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender advocacy, as well as and environmental extremism." Well I thought that was hilarious. Imagine, the extreme left-wingism of being against the death penalty or protesting against war! Geez, what a nutbar. Posted by: mike at March 5, 2004 04:24 PM | PERMALINKThe good bloggers attribute. As for the rest, ignore them. I found
you through Marshall, who gave you several good plugs on the AWOL story.
I've noticed you also attribute. You have a classy operation, and I
especially enjoy your willingness to admit you don't have all the
answers -- so rare in either journalism or politics. Kev (If I may be so bold), To me you are next to Josh Marshall on my must read blogs each day. I
like yours better because I can comment. But, Josh is paid, you are
not. Therefore, to me you represent the best in blogging IMHO, you do it
just because you think it's right. You are a Thomas Paine of the 21st
century. "Suitable punishments should be submitted in comments." Constitutional Amendment? Posted by: Charlie at March 5, 2004 04:33 PM | PERMALINKI agree Kevin No need to worry I too found you but thru Cjr campaign desk.I think that may be a very good sign. Its not who copys you but who mentions you. Posted by: smalfish at March 5, 2004 04:45 PM | PERMALINKWhat a shame the story was complete and utter crap. This demonstrates that bloggers are a) credulous b) ignorant c) partisan and d) incapable of fact-checking. Posted by: a at March 5, 2004 04:46 PM | PERMALINKIf Josh (if I may be so bold) happened to read this I would hope that he would not take offense. I admire Josh for saying things the mainstresm press won't touch with a 10' pole. But Mr. Drum, have no fear of you're reputation. You have the Democratic donkey tatooed on your forehead, and none of us have any doubt of that. Plus, and more importantly, you speak of what needs to be spoken of. And we can't have enough of that. This has improved my masturbatory sex life tremendously! However, I don't yet have the courage, even after several brandy-and-apple-juices, to inform my real-life sex partner about this triumph in the blogosphere. I know to do so would mean about 14 incredibly difficult questions and total alienation the entire weekend. Posted by: js7a at March 5, 2004 05:14 PM | PERMALINKGood job, js7a. Someone needs to remember all the silly assurances we were give: "we know what we are doing, don't second-guess us, we have data you don't, we're certain, they have WMDs, there will be more jobs, you can call me on it". These past three years were witness to a continous series of conjobs. Posted by: ch2 at March 5, 2004 05:45 PM | PERMALINKKevin, relax. Posted by: Irrational Bush Hatred at March 5, 2004 05:47 PM | PERMALINKI would just like to confirm that, by attribution, you mean something along the lines of "I found something interesting over at Calpundit today", or "Thanks to Calpundit for showing us the way to this article", when linking to one of your posts etc. at another website. Posted by: Michael at March 5, 2004 08:23 PM | PERMALINKYeah, I also checked out Kesier's "helpful" source on how Teresa Heinz-Kerry is using foundation money to help destroy America. Ha! The diatribe you find there is written by a guy from the Capital Research Center, a right-wing outfit that cringes at any expenditures on social programs. Here is the CRC's own description of its activities, culled from its web site: Capital Research Center is analyzing organizations that promote the growth of the welfare state - now almost universally recognized as a failure - and in identifying viable private alternatives to government welfare programs. Posted by: Tongue Boy at March 9, 2004 01:00 PM | PERMALINKG'day Kevin Drum, Someone claiming to be you posted a comment on Tim Blair's blog that seems to be complaining that Tim misrepresented you. The link that Tim puts up leads to this post in which you (humourously) noted that you did not get enough credit for popularising the bogus Guardian article. In your original link to the article you noted that the Guradian was hyping the story not that basically everything the Grauniad said about it was wrong (authors, status, security classification etc). Tim comments that you don't seem to mind taking some credit for the immense web-popularity for the Gruadina's bogus story. Tim's comment seems valid - if you are the Kevin Drum that complained would you care to provide some detail as to why you feel misrepresented.
