January 11, 2004 COMMENT PERMALINKS....A few days ago someone emailed me to say that it would be nice if there were permalinks to individual comments. That did sound nice, but as with so many other good suggestions about my site it required technical knowledge that I didn't have. Today, though, via Outside the Beltway, who got it from Wizbang, who in turn got it from the agreeably-initialed kd at Hooha, I acquired the minimal knowledge needed to implement this feature. Each individual comment now has a permalink that you can use if you feel like directing your withering scorn toward a specific piece of egregious buffoonery in the comments section. Technology marches on. UPDATE: For future reference, here are instructions on how to do this in a Movable Type blog:

I've always wanted to direct my withering scorn toward specific pieces of egregious bufoonery [sic], and now the happy day has arrived when I can! Posted by: NTodd at January 11, 2004 02:34 PM | PERMALINKHow come there's so few comments here now? Posted by: Talking Wall at January 11, 2004 03:07 PM | PERMALINKKevin, Maybe someone e-mailed you about it a few days ago, but I suggested it to you in this post of yours on purely capitalistic grounds. (I would link to the comment directly, but I can't, which is the whole point, isn't it?) Either way, I'm glad you did it. If I ever start my own blog, I'll have to ask you to forward me the instructions on how to give each comment its own permalink. I still have your post about RSS feeds which included how to make the default Movable Type RSS feed a full one in my "useful pages" list. Posted by: Mitch Schindler at January 11, 2004 03:19 PM | PERMALINKMitch: yep, that's probably what I was thinking of. It was probably your comment, not email. At any rate, you now have your wish! Posted by: Kevin Drum at January 11, 2004 03:26 PM | PERMALINKi always respect the use of the word "bufoonery." well done sir. Posted by: Linkmeister at January 11, 2004 03:52 PM | PERMALINKJust fyi, the proper target for creating new windows is actually target="_blank", not target="new". target="new" will target a specific window named "new" in many cases, which means that if you click on multiple links with it, they'll replace text from the same window instead of opening a new one each time. Posted by: TK at January 11, 2004 05:09 PM | PERMALINKThanks, Kevin. :) I implemented this on my blog too. -kat Posted by: katster at January 11, 2004 08:17 PM | PERMALINKThis doesn't make legitimate anchors, because anchors can't start with numbers, just letters. To make this legal, add something like the letter "c" or the word "comment" before your MovableType tags: <a name="comment<$MTCommentID$>"></a> <a href="<$MTEntryLink$>#comment<$MTCommentID$>" target="new">PERMALINK</a> I mention this only because your blog is so well-read, and some folks might not understand why their blogs use non-standard HTML. By the way, I like to use pad="1" in the MTCommentID tag -- this produces padding to six characters using zeros, so all your links are the same size. It's not necessary, but it just looks nicer. --Kynn I don't know about this, man. Permalinkable comments. Soon searchable archives. If people are responsible for their comments, pretty soon only the responsible will comment. My Lord. Just googled myself and all my comments on all these blogs are out there. Still. Forever. Somehow I thought they got archived, erased, or buried way down in non-googlable midden heaps.
