THE JOYS OF BLOGGING....The joys of unedited blogging, that is. First, Mickey Kaus:

Yep. One of the ways in which I think blogs really are superior to print journalism is that bloggers talk in the first person, just like people do on television. Compare this to writing an op-ed, where even the best writers are forced into an artificial essay-ish sort of tone that just doesn't allow them to get their point across in quite the same way.

(By the way, the television analogy is the best one I've heard for allowing unedited blogging. If a newspaper is willing to allow its reporters to appear on TV with the newspaper's logo prominently displayed in the background, why are they afraid to let them blog unedited? This is a pretty powerful argument.)

Mickey Kaus is not so much a blogger as he is a hack.

I think a better analogy is talk radio, since that's an even more personality-driven medium than TV.

Maybe I'm missing something because I don't understand the technology, but what is there to "allow" about unedited blogging? I thought that anyone who (unlike me) knew how to do it could just blog, using an editor or not as one saw fit.

My favorite benefit of blogging is the anonymity. As a journalist who isn't allowed to spout my opinions in my articles, I can vent freely in my blog, and no one's the wiser. And instead of having people scrutinize my credentials, they can read my ideas and evaluate them at face value.

An appropriate analogy to Easterbrook would be Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe, who got in heaps o'trouble for saying on (radio? TV? I think TV) that he'd like to smack Jason Kidd's wife (doubly tasteless since Kidd had previously been arrested for hitting his wife). The Globe suspended Ryan for a month. (In that case, the Globe actually has cracked down at times on outside TV/radio appearances).

C.J.: yep, anyone can do it. The debate mostly applies to people who blog for magazines and newspapers, places where your writing would normally go through an editor. Since you're writing under their banner, should they require you to go through an editor?

Well, with my lawyer hat on, I would strongly advise any magazine or newspaper with a blogger writing under its banner to send the blogger's work through an editor. Lack of editorial oversight could be used to argue the type of reckless disregard for the truth necessary to sustain a libel verdict . . .
