LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION UM, HOLD ON A SECOND....Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday on a visit to Sacramento:

"Action, action, action, action — that's what people have voted me into this office for," Schwarzenegger told reporters as he began a late-afternoon meeting with the top two party leaders from both houses of the Legislature. "They wanted to have a governor that is filled with action, that performs and that represents the people, and that's what I'm here to do."

Arnold Schwarzenegger today:

On his second day of meetings with state officials, the incoming governor emerged sobered from a 35-minute morning tutorial with state Treasurer Phil Angelides....

"The problem was created over the last five years, and so you can't expect that -- even though I've played very, very heroic characters in the movies, but you can't expect me to walk into his office and all of a sudden come out with the answers," said the governor-elect, whose usual ebullience was dampened after the meeting. "It will take a while to resolve those problems. They are very difficult problems, and we are really in a disastrous situation financially."

So much for action, action, action, and that was after a single 35-minute meeting. I wonder how he's going to feel after a whole week?

It's okay, he has all of six months to fix everything. Otherwise, I am sure someone has $2 million to fund a petition drive.

Posted by: Mithras at October 23, 2003 10:19 PM | PERMALINK

Six months? What happened to "100 Days?" In fact, I recall the campaign pledge as "Day One--audit everything," which would magically provide all the answers needed to fix everything (in presumably days 2 through 100.

He is truly fucked. Can't say i feel bad about it. Hollywood star chews off more than he can handle... Unfortunately, California gets to suffer longer.

Hey, I'm all for the traditional "Gomer gets an earful of the facts of life, and a dysfunctional government is now led by a popular rank amateur" style of humor. But doesn't this stuff add up to actual poor government, resulting in real damage at some point?

Granted, we are trying it out(again) at the national level, but poor California has a Hollywood governor at a time that the nation has a Potemkin President.

Can the most productive state in the union survive that type of double whammy?

Yes, obviously CA will actually survive, but let's face it, it's about to get tag-teamed, on top of a recession and a good rogering from some energy companies now facing jail time, eventually, I hope.

Good thing Georgia doesn't have to face this kind of lunacy. As an Illinois resident, I don't think I could afford that.

Posted by: David Glynn at October 23, 2003 11:17 PM | PERMALINK

A good rogering? I have no idea what that means. Help me out.

On Arnold. You had to know this was going to happen, right? There was never a moment when any rational person with a minimal understanding of California specifically or state government generally thought that Arnold had anything useful to bring to the table. For the powers that be, he is a name and myth to con voters into throwing an elected Democrat who commited no malfeasance out of office. For the voters who supported him in their ignorance, he is a myth, an idea of how they want to believe the world works, or perhaps an expression of their anger at a world that just doesn't care what happens to them. It may come as news to that last group that Arnold doesn't care either.

Arnold is unquestionably a fraud, but so is Bush and nobody with any circulation or audience has called him out yet.

I bet he'll be singing the same tune that Clint Eaastwood did after his term. I don't understand how he might have thought that now, with California in the state is, would present an opportunity for political advancement. Either he was politically and factually unaware, he's just a pawn, or he wasn't thinking when he was convinced to run.

Boo-fucking-hoo.

All i can say is thank God California does not have a military or the ability to attack foreign countries.

So, look for lots of wedge politics and hate mongering, Pete Wilson style. A culture war or race war. A war against indian tribes, unions, immigrants, affirmative action, teachers, overtime pay, family leave, gays, environmentalists and anyone esle they can engage.

Look how bush has survived. Arnis will do the same thing, and California will suffer just as the US has.

May all of those union workers who voted for the moron enjoy their wallmart wages.

Your being harsh about Arnold. I'd think it's a good thing that he says what he said after that meeting. Would you have rather of had him excited? Maybe a better way to look at his comments is that even though he's going to go go go action action action it's a huge job. What would you have prefered him to say?

Posted by: Christina Jackson at October 24, 2003 12:22 AM | PERMALINK

The difference between Arnold and Bush is that, following such a sobering meeting, Gorgeous George would still be saying the same shit he went into it with, while Arnold has the good sense not to.

Posted by: Jeff Roby at October 24, 2003 12:42 AM | PERMALINK

"while Arnold has the good sense not to"

So we should be happy that he looks like he had it all wrong and did not know his ass from a hole in the ground when he campaigened on the "promise" that in 100 days, he would have calif. all fixed up and looking like new?

I can't wait for those hydrogen gas stations. Maybe they will be in place by around 2050.

And i can't wait to hear him explain the sexual battery...and the press to hold him to his promise to address it after the election. It seems he could rape mother teresa and murder the pope and the GOP and the media would still think it is so cool he is gov and would not dare say a thing.

Hmmm...

Dream on. I know you folks have as an article of faith that Schwarzenegger will fail, but that's what it boils down to, faith. As I recall you folks were equally convinced that
a)The recall election would get bogged down or overturned by court action
b)Davis would beat the recall
or
c)Bustamante would win

So far your record of prediction and analysis of the California situation isn't much to brag about. Maybe you should wait until the Governator is in office for, say, a week before making even more emabarrassing predictions.

BTW, any of you folks still think the car tax tripling can't be reversed easily by Schwarzenegger?

This learning things the hard way instead of the populace have sufficient interest and intelligence to elect responsible politicians is getting old. There is just such an incredible amount of waste and destruction that comes from electing morons like Reagan, Bush, and Schwarzenegger; and it takes so long just to get back to where you were years before (if you ever do). And that's not even considering the insidious ones, like Delay. Its all very disheartening.

Posted by: danuube at October 24, 2003 06:02 AM | PERMALINK

For California's sake, I hope Arnold administration is a success, but I have me doubts. Anyway, judging from some of the comments above, I expect to read remarks like these here soon:

September 2003: Arnold will solve everything.

November 2003: Give him time. You can't expect Arnold to solve everything immediately.

January 2004: Well, Arnold would solve everything if a) he had more authority and b) X didn't hate him so (where X may be "liberals," "feminists," "illegal immigrants," etc.)

2004-2005?: It isn't Arnold's fault the state's bankrupt. He's only one man. No one ever said he was perfect. Did Arnold ever say, precisely, "I'm perfect. I'll solve everything."? No. Why don't you leave, if you don't like it here? Anyway, he's better than Davis.

On one hand, I don't think that Arnold is going to change things much. On the other hand, I don't think it matters. Things will be pretty much as they were under Davis, except that people will me more satisfied with their predicament, because they have a leader they actually like.

While I think what California really needs is a new constitution, the state is just functional enough to keep on keepin' on. The people just needed someone to help them "keep the faith," and Arnold provides that for them.

Paul, precisely right.

One other prediction: in 2004, regardless of his abject failure to address California's woes, he will be a prodigious fundraiser for the GOP, and a hotly-sought guest by Republican candidates throughout the country.

California, a state whose own attorney general voted for this clown, richly deserves the consequences of its populist myopia. My greater fear is his election will blight other state and Congressional elections next year.

Too funny! Note that AS said "the problem was created over the last five years". It couldn't have been created over the last, oh, 6 years, or the last 7 years, because then it would have started during... Wilson's governorship. And with so much of Wilson's stink on the Schwarzenegger crew, that would not be a Good Thing. Nope, must deflect criticism, must deflect criticism. Say, when did the energy market pseudo-deregulation in California take place? Must have been in the last 5 years, right?

Kevin, it won't surprise me if Arnold does something, it will help but won't bring back the dot bubble boom. Maybe he can fine WalMart for illegals or something.
To fix the Cal gov't mess -- More tax revenue; or lower expenditures. Recommendations: keep the car tax? increase gas tax? roll back previous new Davis programs??? Prolly that roll back will be tried.
If the Dems agree, he's doing something. If they don't ... it's CLEARLY their fault in Nov. 2004.

You know, this could be very interesting to watch. We have a governor-elect who, like many newly elected officials and most of the people in the country (apparently), thought that simply deciding to fix things would get things fixed. Arnold is actually TELLING us what he is discovering and how it is changing his world view. Most of the time, these guys kind of disappear into the mess and are never heard from again. I'm going to be intrigued to watch him learn how the world really works as time passes.

Give him a chance after what he just did to the state. You have got to be joking. He belongs in jail for the way he has abused women and his power. He is as slimy and rotten as a human being can be. The statute of limitations for sexual battery is only one year. This is probably why he did not run in the real election only one year earlier despite claiming to have such a deeeeep desire to serve the state and be govenor to give something back. So deep he did not run in the real election ll months earlier.

What a fraud and a PHONY. And a bald faced liar. He needs to be crushed like the cock roach he is.

Posted by: obe at October 24, 2003 03:05 PM | PERMALINK

Don't feel too sorry for Arnold. Those in the media are still giving him a pass and he's got two built-in excuses that he'll be flogging for at least the next few years:

1. He didn't create the mess.

2. He's being blocked by those obstructionist Democrats in the legislature.

Sadly, I do not anticipate seeing him suffer for either his assaults on women nor his ignorance and bogus claims and promises prior to assuming office. I'd very much like to be proved wrong, though.

Posted by: PaulB at October 24, 2003 03:59 PM | PERMALINK

I will allow Arnold one break - he expressed honestly that the situation began about the same time Gray Davis did, which means that the seeds planted for this major problem he now faces wasn't really Davis' fault.

That having been said, the pounding or the pity must be withheld until he actually DOES something, for only then will we know if he really learned something or not.

Was California run into the ground? I don't think there is any data to back that up. Unless you can cite some facts, it's just another right wing lie.

What's amazing is that anyone, including Arnold, could believe that they understand the financial situation in California after a 35 minute meeting.

What's even more amazing is the persistent belief that everything will be just fine, and the budget can be balanced without any tax increase by cutting out some bullshit programs, especially programs initiated during Davis's administration.

Please, don't hold back. I'm sure Arnold could use some guidance. What are the programs? How much will be saved by cutting them out?

Or is this just another right wing lie?

It's interesting to note that this is how you all thought of Bush circa February '01 ... a figurehead, an asterisk, an illegitimate placeholder in office but not in power during this strange interlude in the Clinton reign.

Things turned out a little differently. And it drives you nuts.

Posted by: Jake at October 25, 2003 05:47 AM | PERMALINK

While repealing the car tax may be easy, coming up with the 4.3 billion to backfill the money needed to run local governments is going to be extraordinarily difficult. The state already has an 8 billion dollar a year structurual deficit.

The VLF money funds 16% of cities' general revenue and 25% of counties' general revenue.
Cities and counties provide the services that are most visibile and important to Californians, including police, fire, and paramedics, which take up 60% plus of cities' general fund expenditures.

Cities have already gone through several rounds of belt-tightening, and with a hit like this, they will start to lay off policemen, firemen, paramedics. Every local elected official in the state is already lobbying Sacramento, and cutting the VLF without replacing the funds will subject Schwarznegger to an immediate outpouring of criticism.

Wonder what the aggressively anti-intellectual talk-radio dittoheads will do when they figure this out.

Posted by: Aeolus at October 25, 2003 05:49 AM | PERMALINK

The more I think about it, the less I think the recall was about fixing things. Arnold's strength is in communication and he should roll with that. The Davis office communicated infrequently, ineffectively, without passion, often delayed, and without making its points relevant to listeners. And they couldn't get on the evening news without a whif of scandal or blood. Like most folks, Californians can take bad news and accept harsh choices. But you have to prepare us, keep us in the loop as it goes forward, and steadily report status. Davis surprised the electorate, repeatedly, with bad news, and paid for this sin.

Arnold would do well to amp up his communications office, both with headcount and funding. I wouldn't mind a progress report monthly, maybe in the form of a 1-page letter. Maybe a chart of the month with an explanation of the choices we face. The new executive needs to communicate via a wider range of channels than ever before. Television, radio addresses, emails, an Office of the Governor Weblog (hey, anyone want to be Arnold's Blogger in Chief?), and versions tailored for the millions of citizens who are more comfortable in another language.

I also wouldn't mind my state senators and assemblymen spending more time and effort communicating (although half the senate and a third of assembly are term-limited lame ducks).

Hmm. The politicians woke up when they saw all the cameras. In sleep Sacremento. Where business as usual usually comes without lights.

Did you know that Grey Davis may not get all those late-signing bills approved?

How, you say?

UNSPOKEN is the reality that a bad politician doesn't need to stand next to an angry TERMINATOR.

So, right now, there's no intention of calling the goons back in session before November 17th. Without the legislature commiting mass suicide (by signing Grayout's recent paperwork of flying paper), many of those things will die on the vine.

Of course, there are the judges. That's not in need of approval just yet. That will come later, when judges go in front of the public (because judges do need to be voted into their chairs).

Imagine the brew-ha when the right again finds a voice and puts up a bag load of candidates (because in a fixed world judges rarely run against anybody) ... And what do you see?

Will Gray Davis be the Willy Horton ad used against democrats? You don't see the paper trail?

You think Arnold has to say something?

I think he just has to flex muscle.

And, I also see a bunch of cowards in Sacramento obviously fearing that if the legislature turns over then there goes the CHAIRMANSHIPS to COMMITTEES!

When do you think the democrats were in so much peril? Even Ronald Reagan didn't scare the democratic politicians quite this much.

It's a new, new thing, here, folks. With new horizons. Stupid for the democrats not to have caught the wave.

Well, the next ten years won't be boring. (It's never boring when you going through an earthquake.)

Ah, yes, some bright poster up there wants a JUDICIAN POLITICAL THEATER of 'trying Arnold for crimes committed against women.' What realism do you need to know that JUDICIAL THEATER IS A JOKE.

By the way, it was tried on Clinton. Clinton passed. And, the jerks that attacked him looked like repressed lunatics with their drawers all up in a knot. Which says a whole lot about Mormons and their underwear drawers.

Fuhgetaboutit.

Every day brings better news for Bush.

And, Schwartzenegger.

You can call it a honeymoon, if you want to. But it may also be the beginning of a rout.

Some day, 100 years from now parents will be trying to explain to children just what the party of democrats was all about. And, they'll compare the comings and goings of this thing to WHIGS.

Oh, you didn't know we had those?

Whigs are a great reminder, too, of JUDICIAL THEATER. Has nothing to do with our Constituition. Just ambitious young men who think if they get their 15 minutes of fame they can move up their own career ladders.

Of course, some people are beginning to see the FLY in the OINTMENT. There goes a prosecutor looking for his 15 minutes of fame; and the world goes Internet access on him right away.

Maybe, it's similar to watching two careers go bust in the night, here. Kobe Bryant's is being dangled out there as finished. But what about the prosecutor? Do you think one day those are the people who will get the shaft?

No, you say? Well, what's Marsha Clark up to these days? And, I can't even remember the name of her boyfriend, and co-council, the black guy.

Saving clippings for your grandchildren to read just isn't the same anymore. Heck, you can buy headlines for yourselves, now, when you visit Disneyland.

Anyway, for those of you who don't get enough Court-TV, it reminds me of the days when people watched Sam Ervin. And, women cried that their soaps got bounced.

Some things just never change enough for it to become a working model in the future. Arnold will not have to worry about dames. Who knows? He may yet get to replace Bob Dole as the Viagra poster boy. Rush just reached for the wrong 'little blue pills.'

All who instantly start talking about Bush when addressing challenges before a state governor are jackasses - even if they have a point, it gets lost in the noise.

Swartzenegger's greatest option is the one unavailable to Davis/Wilson or anyone else in recent memory - abandoning the Legislature and going straight to the voters. This leaves the stiff-necked legislators the option of campaigning against their own constituents - "You should not be bothered with these decisions - becuase I am a professional and you are too stupid to understand what is best for you..."

Move-on.org and other lying pieces of shit are being hoisted upon their own petards (literally: stepping on their own land mines) - Congratulations! The people are active in their government! Opps!! They are marching off in the opposite direction you TOLD them to go.... Damn their independence!!

[By all means respond by talking about how stupid and manipulated the people are now - versus how "enlightened" and "properly informed" they would be if they ONLY bought your product/orientation.]

Aeolus

You missed the point.

Of course the localities need revenue to function, that's just one of many budget problems Schwarzenner will have to manage.
But how clueless was Art in San Francisco to still believe it takes an act of the legislature to repeal the car tax increase? Art's cluelessness is symptomatic of the larger cluelessness on dramatic display in the comments.

The partisan Democrats are in deep deep denial and still living in a fantasy world with the most tenuous connection to reality. Davis was a disaster for California and the Democratic Party, but they can't admit it. And the partisans are still being drawn as moths to the flame, obsessing about Scwarzennegger, Who, boiled down, is merely a fiscal conservative and social liberal and relatively non-partisan.

I am hugely amused that the obsessiveness on display is starting to prove one prediction I made for the Schwarzenegger administration. I predicted that Schwarzenegger's celebrity would prove to be an irressitable target for the Left-wingers and partisan Democrats. I also predicted that target fixation would be so severe it would even give Bush some more breathing room. That part remains to be seen, but Doonesbury's taking a whole week of strips to Bash Schwarzenegger post-election is a nice start. We shall see.

My other prediction about the Schwarzenegger administration is that it is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the economic cycle. He comes into office, with things as bad as they can get, and no blame for how bad things are.
By re-election time, THREE YEARS FROM NOW, the improved national economy will lift California government revenues and fix a lot of the current State problems without Schwarzenegger doing anything. But he will be in office to take credit! Boo-F**king-Hoo.

I have been trying to phone the govenors office to urge him NOT to cut benefits for disabled people which he is trying to do. HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THE PHONES IT THE GOV. OFC ARE NOT WORKING! WHAT AN ASS HE IS.Why, Mr Terninator, who proclaims to be 'for the people' would you cut the benefits to those who need it the most?
Your boastful persona and withered promises make me furious at you. You are not a strong man, afterall, you are a wimp. DO NOT CUT BENEFITS FOR OUR DISABLIED CITIZENS!!!!
