October 19, 2003 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!....At 8:03 pm tonight I'll turn 45. Happy birthday to me! As an extra special birthday present, tomorrow I get to fly to Cincinnati to visit a customer site. And just to add a little extra excitement to the trip, I'm going to be advising them about some software that I've never used before and know nothing about! Doesn't that make you wish that I were advising your company? Anyway, that's why God invented long airplane trips, so that people like me can pretend to study up for consulting engagements. Now all I have to do is figure out what there is to do in Cincinnati on a weekday evening.... POSTSCRIPT: Trivia question for longtime readers: what was the very first song I heard after I was born? The best attraction of Cincinnati is the river. There are interesting places on both the Ohio and Kentucky sides of the river. For example, Newport on the Levy in Kentucky, has restaurants, cinema and an aquarium. Cincinnati is an extraordinarily reactionary place.The President is extremely popular here but there are pockets of open minded people. A major festival, Tall Stacks, just blew through town and the populace may be partied out. Popular drinking areas downtown include Main street, Mt. Adams located within a mile of downtown. In general, Downtown is still recovering from the riots and boycott at least in terms of perception. Many people who live in the suburbs are afraid to go downtown. The Contemporary Arts Center building has been dubbed the greatest architecural achievement of the post war era(I believe that is WWII, not Gulf War II) by the New York Times. It is located on 6th Street downtown. The Aronoff Center, has second run broadway shows and other forms of live entertainment. Monday nights are not exactly hopping. To check out what is going on. Long story, but I live five hours away so it was lost forever despite the assurances of the staff that they would mail it to me. So don't go to Skyline to satisfy your craving for fast-food chili. And you missed the freakin' amazing Blind Boys of Alabama tonight... Oh well...since you're in town only briefly, you might want to try the puzzlement that is Cincinnati chili. Camp Washington is a great suggestion, although Skyline is good and a lot easier (there's one about every five blocks). Now, here's the thing...don't go into it expecting actual chili -- it's more a spaghetti topping with lots of cheese added. It's an unusual taste (supposedly including cinnamon and other weird spices), not for everyone, but definitely worth a try if you've never had it. Don't go to Mt. Adams -- every city has a cutesy little urban spot with cutesy little bars. Go to Clifton (esp. Ludlow St.) or Main St. downtown. Or the Greenwich in East Walnut Hills. If you can, try to stay at (or at least visit) the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. It's supposedly haunted by "the lady in green." According to legend, her husband, a hotel laborer, was killed during the construction of the hotel in 1930. His body was never found. Her ghost walks the halls looking for him. A funny sweet flavor with cloves and crap like that. Mainstrasse Village in Covington (Kentucky side) is a nice old part of town with more than a few places to eat. And the Roebling Bridge should look really familiar to you if you remember the opening titles for "WKRP in Cincinnati". Happy birthday! I'd say check out the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, but haven't been back there for years now, and you would not want to go there after dark anyway.
