October 18, 2003 LET'S JUST PRIVATIZE THE BLUE STATES, OK?....From the Wall Street Journal yesterday:
It's good to see that the party of honor and integrity is back in charge. Posted by Kevin Drum at October 18, 2003 04:08 PM | TrackBackComments
Quick- if you live in a blue state, clean out your refrigerators NOW. Posted by: MillionthMonkey at October 18, 2003 04:17 PM | PERMALINKThis is politics as its always been done. Knock of the stupid "honor
and integrity" bullshit because you won't say the same thing when the
Democrats play politics and do the same stuff. This is politics as its always been done. Oh, that must make it OK then! Knock of the stupid "honor and integrity" bullshit because you won't say the same thing when the Democrats play politics and do the same stuff. So your argument boils down to "both sides do this so shut up." I hear this a lot from Republicans. Yet they never cite examples to back up their lame assertions. "We'll exempt your state from this if you vote for it" is repulsive no matter how you slice it. "you won't say the same thing when the Democrats play politics and do the same stuff." Example please? I mean this kind of stuff is becoming business as usual for legislators who puffed and preened about restoring "integrity" to the system. C'mon. Give us an example of Demos twisting the legislative process in such a nakedly partisan way. (you?) ... Cheerio! Posted by: zerosumgame at October 18, 2003 04:42 PM | PERMALINKGooberbaby, you would have a point *if* the GOp hadn't campaigned on -- yes! -- a platform of so-called "honor and integrity." Politics as usual is one thing, and once upon a time both side were content to play by long-established rules. The current crop of Republicans, however, promised honor and integrity, and so we're well within our rights to hold them accountable, thank you very much. It's a pity, in fact, that their own constituents are obviously willing to give them a pass when they renege on their promises. Posted by: Gregory at October 18, 2003 04:53 PM | PERMALINKHey, let me add something to the mix: do y'all think adding the infamous provision to exempt pharma companies from liability over thimeriosal (the vaccine additive suspected of playing a role in autism) into the homeland security bill is more sleazy than this sorry episode, or less? Posted by: Gregory at October 18, 2003 04:56 PM | PERMALINKGooberbaby, why do Republicans need the inducement of their states getting exemptions on this particular issue? After all, the issue is privatization. I mean, isn't privatization ipso facto always a good idea? Why wouldn't Republicans sign on to this without coercion? Gee whiz, I just don't understand. Posted by: Jeff Boatright at October 18, 2003 05:00 PM | PERMALINKThere's also something incredibly through-the-looking-glass about trying to pass a measure by exempting the states of legislators who support it. Is the privatization a good idea? Then why the exemptions? Passing a measure that only affects those who oppose it seems baldly punitive. Posted by: Kregg at October 18, 2003 06:34 PM | PERMALINKSo, Gooberbaby, politics sucks. Ergo, no criticism of it is valid. Great. You know, we vote politicians into office in America. If they suck -- it is because we suck. Posted by: Timothy Klein at October 18, 2003 11:36 PM | PERMALINKGee, Gooberbaby, your comment makes it sound like you believe that the exemption is a good thing for the states that get it. Does that mean that you realize that the privatization idea is a BAD one?
