September 24, 2003 ROYAL DANISH BABIES ARE ON THE WAY....Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark is finally getting married, and not a moment too soon for those of us concerned about the Danish royal succession. Hearty congratulations to Australia for finally marrying someone into a European royal house, of course, but really, in the end, what does it all mean? Why, just this:

Since it's a 13-hour flight from Oz to Hawai'i, I have no doubt the HVCB will be pleased about this as well. I didn't see this problem until I read Jim Rogers' Book, Adventure Capitalist. Where he starts his global trip in ICELAND. Hmm. Danish. And, the kids there have to learn to speak Danish in school. Wow. Wouldn't it be better, he wrote, to teach English, Chinese, or Spanish? There are only 3-million Danish speakers world wide. So they have this ancient tradition of getting all excited that they're royal is marrying a royal. Didn't Princess Diana retire this prize? Isn't it about time we modernized? I'm pretty sure that they do learn English, but the reason they learn Danish is that most of them come to Denmark to study - so Denmark should stop speaking Danish so that people from Iceland can focus on learning another language. As a general rule Danes have an easy time speaking with Norwegians and Swedish people as well, so although each of these languages is relatively small they communicate well with each other. Also Mary Donaldson, the woman mentioned, is, as was also mentioned, from Australia. I doubt she's from the Australian royal family cause there ain't one. While the Crownprince still hasn't any children, his younger brother (who so far is next in line after him) has two children, so there are plenty of heirs. I won't even comment on Danish being a dead language. Oh, and for the record, I am not looking forward to all the hype about the marriage. It was bad enough when his younger brother got married. And since I can read, speak and understand Norwegian I can also read Danish (virtually the same as written Norwegian), understand spoken Swedish, mostly read Swedish (it is a bit different) but can barely understand spoken Danish (they sound like they are swallowing a tennis ball whole and trying to speak Norwegian at the same time). Norwegians also begin learning English in the first grade and learn, usually, German or French in high school. Not that any probably cared about that but I felt like writing it. Well as a general rule I think Danes sound awful when speaking English, Norwegian's I guess are okay. I'm speaking of one's that are competent in the language but still have a noticeable accent, most people seem to feel that english-speaking people's accents in Danish is like nails on a chalkboard as well. We had a major blackout of half of Denmark and Sweden the day before, and it was all forgotten when the press release came out the day after. There has been speculations for years about the prince's marriage, and he has had a long list of girlfriends, models, a singer-songwriter, a TV presenter, ..., but never somebody that people could imagine as queen, until this Mary Donaldson turned up. The prince cannot marry without the consent of the head of state, his mother, and the state council, which is the government presided by the queen. They will give their consent on 10/8 and the wedding will be in spring. There is absolutely no doubt that the secret services here have had Mary and her family through the big wringer to see if there were any hidden scandals there, like drinking excessive debts, gambling, promiscuity, criminality, whatever. It seems they all came out clean. In principle I'm a republican, since people should merit their position, not inherit it, but in practice the monarchy has around 90% popular support, so it is not a political issue. As long as they are well-behaved, that won't change. If they start behaving like the English royal family, consensus will wane. There is also the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Constitutional monarchy actually works quite well. It ensures stability around the head of state position, which is purely decorative anyway, and it is good business. If the queen visits the US, her presense causes some headlines, which probably wouldn't happen to the same extent if we had a president. Whenever the royals travel they have a huge entourage of businessmen with them, trying to cash in on the attention, and it works. The publicity value of the monarchy is substantial. The royals have a long tradition for picking spouses from abroard. The queens mother was from Sweden, her husband is French and her first daughter-in-law of mixed English-Austrian-Hong Kong origin, and now there'll be an Australian in the family. Is a kind of globalisation, I guess. As for the language, the Hong Kong princess learnt the language in about six months and speaks it brilliantly. Mary will too, because it is paramount for her future success as queen. She probably already speaks it quite well, since she has lived here for over a year, working for the local branch of MicroSoft (another royal family and business connection).
