VALERIE PLAME UPDATE....Who was it that outed Joseph Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, as a CIA agent? Robert Novak said only that it was two "senior administration officials," but Joseph Wilson himself hasn't pointed a specific finger.

Until now. I didn't notice the significance of this last week (sorry, Natasha!), but last night Mark Kleiman linked to Pacific Views, which has a snippet from a public panel in Washington last Thursday in which Wilson participated. Here's what he said:

AUDIENCE QUESTION: Assuming what Robert Novak said about your wife was true....can we expect the FBI to give a complete unhindered investigation into that?

WILSON: [Long statement in which he says, basically, they're professionals and will do a professional investigation. Then:] At the end of the day, it's of keen interest to me to see whether or not we can get Karl Rove frog-marched out of the White House in handcuffs. And trust me, when I use that name, I measure my words.

"Senior administration official" is a term of art, and Karl Rove is certainly a member of that elite group. Will the FBI be knocking on his door soon?

NOTE: Wilson's quote has been corrected fom Natasha's handwritten notes via a video of the event here.

I was there. It was the culmination of a couple of things he said about the administration mendacity. The first non-topical question asked of him was about his wife - at least some are aware.

About that video link: Has anyone succeeded in watchin/downloading it?

I'm here on a Linux/Mozilla system and all it does is to shortly display an empty page with "Checking your system" in the title, then redirects me to Inslee's page.

That really bugs me, because I am able to watch most Microsoft video formats here and the rest I can convert.

What's up with that?

Mmmm. "Frog-march". They have a word for everything.

Felix -

I'm using Mozilla/Camino here on my Mac, and I had to turn off popup blocking to view the stream. It's a RealVideo stream, so I'm not sure how Linux interacts with that.

Matt--

Thanks so much for the direct links; I'll mail Inslee to post them.

Looking good. That 2Mbit/s line is really worth it. ;)

I've got to believe that if Wilson felt he could mention Rove's name, then he has spoken to someone in a position to know it was Rove, and that person almost certainly will, if questioned by the investigators, give up both Rove's name and the evidence of Rove's involvement.

My prediction: in the fullness of time, we will indeed see Rove do the funny walk.

I'd say either Wilson knows it was Rove and expects it will be proven or Wilson is so stupid as to be completely discounted. My gut tells me the former.

Posted by: Magenta at August 26, 2003 05:23 PM | PERMALINK

There's no way we're going to see Rove led out of the White House in handcuffs, unless he's caught with a periscope outside the Lincoln Bedroom while the twins are having a family weekend at the White House.

Even so, any scrutiny pointed his way is not good for Bush, because it distracts Mr. Rove from his other duties. If he's spending lots of time talking to counsel, that's less time he can spend coming up with schemes to get Bush "re"-elected.

btw, is Mr. Rove married? Just curious, is all. With his busy schedule, he must find it difficult to have time with the opposite sex.

Posted by: edub at August 26, 2003 05:44 PM | PERMALINK

Just did my own research == Rove is married and has a son.

Posted by: edub at August 26, 2003 05:50 PM | PERMALINK

Spooks and intelligence operatives know how to measure their words better than any other profession. My bet is Wilson has at least two sources for this or he would never have said it. He has put the bulls eye on Rove, and got Hillary and others watching his back. If Rove did this, not even Dubya will be able to pull his ass from the fire. Agency guys stick together for life, and will fight like no tomorrow if one of their own has been wronged. Being outed is up there with the worst of wrongs.

Posted by: chris at August 26, 2003 05:52 PM | PERMALINK

btw, is Mr. Rove married?

Yes, twice. From a New Yorker profile:

Rove married a young woman named Valerie Wainright, whose family was in the Bush social circle in Houston. (The marriage didn't last long, and Rove remarried in 1986; he and his wife, Darby, have one son.)

Posted by: snorfbat at August 26, 2003 05:53 PM | PERMALINK

Thanks, snorfbat. Took me a few clicks, but I found it.

I've found sites that say he still lives in Austin while he consults. Strange dude.

From Gale's Biography Resource Center, I found this:

He doesn't talk much about his family. His geologist dad didn't spend much time at home and his floundering mother, who eventually killed herself, relocated the family frequently. Rove spent his childhood in parts of Colorado, Utah and Nevada. He attended high school in Salt Lake City, Utah, and spent his free time reading books and dissecting debate-team strategies. In describing himself to Henneberger, Rove said that he was a "strange kid," who became a "big nerd, complete with the pocket protector, briefcase, the whole deal."

I'll have to find Bush's Brain, I suppose. (The book, not the real thing.) I'm trying to get a grip on the guy, and whether he's a genius, an evil genius, or in over his head with all the shit going down these days.

Posted by: edub at August 26, 2003 06:06 PM | PERMALINK

A commenter on my blog this morning pointed out that Rove isn't technically a "senior administration official" and thus doesn't fit Novak's description.

If Rove isn't a senior administration official, he's a junior with too many credits.

Posted by: edub at August 26, 2003 07:00 PM | PERMALINK

Rove is Senior Advisor to the President, and as such ranks as a "senior administration official." SAOs include anyone above the rank of Deputy Secretary, and all White House staff at the level of Assistant to the President or above are of that rank.

It might also be worth noting that the SAO designation has been somewhat diluted in recent years. Often times anyone who steps into the briefing room to talk to the press on background is referred to as a SAO, even though it wouldn't be technically accurate to call them that. Not that Novak would make that mistake.

Posted by: Mark S. at August 26, 2003 08:14 PM | PERMALINK

Mark S--you answered part of the question I was just about to post. The other part is how many SAOs are there, roughly? 10? 20? 50? Ballpark.

Posted by: nota bene at August 26, 2003 08:32 PM | PERMALINK

Ballpark, I'd say between 50 and 75. The number varies b/c each White House organizes itself differently. You have 15 departments, so that's 30 folks, plus a handful of cabinet-level (VP, OMB director, Chief of Staff, blah, blah, blah) makes around 40. Another dozen or two are assistant level - Rice, McClellan, lots of people nobody's ever heard of. Tenet's probably in there somewhere, and Mueller.

It certainly isn't a large number, and it wouldn't take more than a couple weeks for a competent investigation to finger the culprit, given a modestly cooperative administration. The likelihood of that latter I won't touch with a ten foot aluminum tube.

Honest question: How would Ambassador Wilson possibly know who Robert Novak's source was? I can only think of three possiblities.

1) Novak told Wilson*;

2) The source told Wilson*;

3) Wilson is guessing (or operating off a false tip).

(* or told someone else who told Wilson)

It seems to me like #3 is orders of magnitude more likely than 1 or 2. I assume that Novak doesn't make a practice of revealing his sources, and that whoever did tip Novak isn't likely to share it with Wilson, who's not exactly a friend of W.

Posted by: J Mann at August 27, 2003 04:57 AM | PERMALINK

A devious person might finger Rove or any senior administration official, putting as much pressure as possible on him or her, thereby forcing the Whitehouse to fess up in order to clear the wrongfully (?) accused official. Bush knows who the two are or he's not doing his job. Wait. Of course he's not doing his job. When in the last two years has this administration served our country? I *don't* think Wilson (and the CIA?) is playing this game, but given the rules Bush plays by it would not be irresponsible to use such a tactic to get the truth revealed. Either way Rove is a good bet.

Posted by: dennisS at August 27, 2003 06:08 AM | PERMALINK

This is much more serious than anyone thinks.

If Wilson knows it was Rove, all of Washington knows it was Rove, and Rove wanted it known. The point was to intimidate the CIA (the leaks) with near deadly force. "Our indispensable people will semi-publicly commit a felony to stop you, and noone can do anything about it"

Remembering Haldeman and Erlichman. Rove is even more important, in a much meaner and smarter administration. The only way Rove goes down is if the president goes down, and you literally cannot imagine the level of fight that would entail in an election year, at time of war. Ain't nobody, dems or press, got that kind of guts.

Which was the point. Rove was trying to scare the toughest spooks, saying "We can and will do ANYTHING"

To blame Karl Rove and "measure your words" implies that someone higher than Karl may be involved.

I'm not sure I see your logic here. It certainly leaves open the possibility that someone higher up is involved, but I don't see how it implies it.

What I DO think that it implies, particularly given Wilson's typically great precision and accurate qualification, is that Wilson has been himself presented with very good evidence that Rove was involved. I personally find it hard to envision circumstances under which he might have come into possession of this compelling evidence himself, without that very evidence (most likely the report of someone in a position to know) turning up in any serious investigation -- which Wilson also appears to believe will, in fact, in the natural course of things, be conducted.

Measuring his words when mentioning a frog walk is certainly to adopt a VERY definite stand on the gravity of the charge and the power of the evidence against Rove. For a diplomat, it is EXTREMELY strong language.

My take

http://www.apostropher.com/blog/archives/2003_08.html#000474

is that while Rove may not be the source (how would Wilson know?) but Wilson has good info that Rove knows who the source is so "Frog Marching in handcuffs" would be: ID the felon or get dragged away for obstruction of justice."

Just trying to read tea-leaves.

is that while Rove may not be the source (how would Wilson know?) but Wilson has good info that Rove knows who the source is so "Frog Marching in handcuffs" would be: ID the felon or get dragged away for obstruction of justice."

This seems like a stretch. I doubt that Wilson would put so direct an accusation out there against Rove unless his own evidence of Rove's involvement was already quite convincing.

what could Wilson's evidence be? Who knows? But if you've read or listened to much of Wilson, you know that he would never say such a thing lightly, and it's hard to see how a mere rumor would allow him to feel entitled to utter his very damaging accusation.

Posted by: frankly0 at August 27, 2003 08:58 AM | PERMALINK

Oh, I don't think he's relying on a rumor; he most certainly has some goods. But read the words carefully; he doesn't say Rove is the source. Diplomatic corps folk are masters of subtlty.

But if Rove knows who it is (and he likely does) this is a way to put him in a very hot spot. If the source acted on Rove's instructions, there's probably a firewall there anyway and O of J is what he'd most likely get stuck on.

Posted by: Froz Gobo at August 27, 2003 09:16 AM | PERMALINK

Well, the only thing I've ever read of Wilson's was his NYTimes editorial, which was RIDDLED with errors. Chief among those errors being that his trip to Niger actually CORROBORATES Bush's SOTU claim, since the claim was that Saddam ATTEMPTED to get uranium from Niger, not that Saddam actually got any. And Wilson said in the NYTimes that he found evidence that Saddam's agent DID ATTEMPT to get the uranium.

So the likely answer here is that Wilson is a nutjob without any evidence to back up his claim.

Posted by: Al at August 27, 2003 09:16 AM | PERMALINK

One other thing - if Wilson ACTUALLY HAS EVIDENCE that it was Rove that leaked the info, what's stopping him from producing that evidence? Why be so coy about it? If it's so damning, what is he waiting for - someone to say "pretty please"?

Posted by: Al at August 27, 2003 09:18 AM | PERMALINK

I remember reading when this first came out that (1) there are more like 15 people who can be attributed as "senior WH advisors" and (2) there was some kind of WH meeting where this was discussed. Rove must have been at the meeting, but most of the others, from their baqckground, should have known that the info should not be divulged. The supposition at the time was that it was either Rove, who might not realize how serious it was, or Cheney/Rums, who would know but probably not care, or thougfht the end justified the means. If someone from the CIA was at the meeting, as seems logical, then maybe Wilson does have source.

Posted by: mimikatz at August 27, 2003 09:34 AM | PERMALINK

Another interesting comment that Wilson made on the video was that he himself has been in touch with the FBI. I didn't catch everything he said, but it was something along the lines of

My own sense is, and I've told the FBI this, should they decide to undertake an investigation, that I want to talk to them about how best to support the investigation...

So it's pretty clear that he has no intention of going away, and that he's actively fighting back.

Posted by: Rob at August 27, 2003 11:19 AM | PERMALINK

Al provides an enjoyable example in microcosm of the Bush administration's gigantic amounts of misinformation regarding Iraq.

In fact, nowhere in Wilson's NY Times editorial (available at http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/06/opinion/06WILS.html?ei=5070&en=c3e75c2c9bdad75f&ex=1062129600&pagewanted=print&position) does he say that he "found evidence that Saddam's agent DID ATTEMPT to get the uranium."

Then, having misstated the facts, Al proceeds to smear Wilson as "a nutjob without any evidence to back up his claim." Just like Scott Ritter was a nutjob, just like Jim McDermott was a nutjob, just like anyone was a nutjob who felt the idea that Iraq was a threat to the US was preposterous.

It really is a badge of honor and a sign of integrity to be attacked by these people. Especially when it's done with LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS.

Posted by: Jon at August 27, 2003 12:07 PM | PERMALINK

Jon's right, Al.

IIRC, Wilson didn't say in the NYT piece that Saddam attempted to get nuclear materials.

Tenet said in an earlier speech that a former official (Wilson) had concluded that the Iraqis had attempted to buy uranium fron Niger, but that the Nigerians weren't selling. I don't know if Wilson ever confirmed or denied that statement.

Posted by: J Mann at August 27, 2003 12:38 PM | PERMALINK

Shoot, shoot, shoot. I HATE (yep, all CAPS) it when folks like Jon are right - and he is right TWICE in his post.

Jon's first correct statement is that Wilson did NOT say in his NYTimes piece that Iraq actually had recently attempted to purchase uranium from Niger -- Wilson only said that in his report back to the CIA after his trip:

"Wilson's report said that a former Niger official told him a businessman had approached him in June 1999 and proposed a meeting with an Iraqi delegation to discuss "expanding commercial relations." As Tenet said in a statement Friday, "The former official interpreted the overture as an attempt to discuss uranium sales."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2003-07-14-uranium-usat_x.htm

Oh well. Nevertheless, this CONFIRMS, not undermines, Bush's SOTU statement.

Jon's second correct statement is this: "Just like Scott Ritter was a nutjob, just like Jim McDermott was a nutjob, just like anyone was a nutjob who felt the idea that Iraq was a threat to the US was preposterous."

Posted by: Al at August 27, 2003 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

Al, Wilson has a hell of an unusally good CV for someone who's a nutjob. See http://www.mideasti.org/html/bio-wilson.html

For instance, Ambassador Wilson holds the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Award, the Department of State Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards, the University of California, Santa Barbara Distinguished Alumnus Award, and the American Foreign Service Association William R. Rivkin Award. Additionally, he has been decorated as a Commander in the Order of the Equatorial Star by the Government of Gabon and as an Admiral in the El Paso Navy by the El Paso County Commissioners.

Whatever is going on, it is much more complex than a nutjob making groundless accusations about one of the most powerful men in the United States. That someone trained in diplomacy, who has served for more than 20 years as a diplomat, would make statements like that without having a clear goal and a good understanding of likely repercussions is not very credible.

Posted by: Lydia Nickerson at August 27, 2003 02:46 PM | PERMALINK

First: no, Al, it doesn't confirm what Bush said. All it confirms it that Tenet claimed this. It doesn't mean that Wilson's report actually said that. (As we know, the relationship of Bush administration officials to the truth is extremely tenuous.) And even if it did, it certainly doesn't mean that Iraq actually was seeking uranium from Niger. As many people have pointed out repeatedly, Iraqis went all over the world in the nineties, seeking support from countries for the lifting of sanctions.

So, you might ask: if the Bush administration really wants to know the truth, have they found this Nigerian official and discussed the matter at length? You can bet that if they had we'd know about it. So why haven't they? The answer is obvious.

Secondly: do you seriously contend that Scott Ritter is a "nutjob"? My apologies if I've misunderstood you. But if that is what you contend, I must say it's grotesque and truly despicable. Ritter in retrospect was completely honest and completely right -- and his stance is particularly impressive since he took it in the face of a disgusting smear campaign against him. It's a sad day for the US when genuine patriots like Ritter are attacked and demeaned. It's much like the Blair government's description of David Kelly as "a Walter Mitty type." Of course, that was even more obscene, since Kelly isn't around to defend himself.

But that's usually the fate of people who genuinely care about their country -- as opposed to those who merely claim to while denouncing others for a lack of patriotism and/or for being "nutjobs."

Posted by: Jon at August 27, 2003 02:51 PM | PERMALINK

Didn't Ritter accept hundreds of thousands of dollars from Saddam for some kind of movie about Iraq? (I know, that doesn't make him a nutjob, but I've never heard the details, and I'm curious).

Posted by: J Mann at August 27, 2003 02:55 PM | PERMALINK

J Mann,

What happened is that while giving talks on Iraq (and his desire to make a documentary), Ritter met an Iraqi-American businessman named Shakir Alkafajii. Alkafajii, who came to the U.S. thirty years ago and is an American citizen, invested $400,000 in what became the movie "In Shifting Sands."

Because Ritter recognized that this might create an appearance of impropriety, he asked the FBI to investigate Alkafajii and the money. The FBI verified that the money for the film did not come from the Iraqi government.

Nevertheless, people began making up stories about how Ritter had taken money from Saddam -- because they wanted to discredit what he was saying but couldn't dispute it on the facts. That the only thing you had heard about this were these lies shows how effective smear campaigns are, particularly when the people doing the smearing have lots of money and power. Of course, they get lots of help from people like Al for free.

Posted by: Jon at August 27, 2003 03:15 PM | PERMALINK

Of course, al-Khafaji is a Saddam sympathizer who often travelled back to Iraq for Saddam-sponsored propaganda shows. He also accompanied Ritter on the filming and set up meetings for Ritter. Is it the full Galloway? Maybe, maybe not. But do you think that the money could be the reason that Ritter did a 180 from 1998, when he testified in the Senate that "Iraq has not been disarmed"? Could be! Or he could just be a nut-job.

So... nut-job, turncoat... whatever.

I'll tell you what. Since you're certain that I don't have such proof, how about we bet on it? I will bet you $500 that I can provide a full quote and dispositive proof of a clearly false statement made by a high-ranking (cabinet-level) Bush administration official regarding Iraq. I look forward to your response. I assume you have the intellectual integrity to take this bet.

I can however say without any reservation that Bush's policies (or lack thereof) bear the hallmark of a highly refined incompetence, burnished to a high sheen through years of willfull ignorance.

The GOP tactic of employing ad hominem attacks only alerts the astute observer to the presence of someone they should listen to, that namely being the target of those attacks.

Just to round out the record, Wilson eventually backpedaled from the Rove accusation. From Noah at Slate:

Wilson, for his part, denied today that he ever accused Rove. He told Chatterbox "Karl Rove" was simply a handy metonym for whatever two "senior administration officials" fingered Plame (correctly or falsely, Wilson still won't say). But Wilson's "I measure my words" comment at the Inslee forum suggests to Chatterbox that Wilson is now being coy about what he knows, or at least suspects, regarding Rove.

Scott McClellan's defense of the administration consisted of challenging reporters "do you have any specific evidence?" No one did. He also implied the story only existed in the media.

I would say that constitutes "digging in one's heals" and that everything from confirming that Plame is in fact a CIA operative will have to be proven and verified. They are probably something 'big' will hit the media and everyone will forget the entire affair.

Also, its interesting that with a large field of Democratic presidential candidates there are several quotable voices out there, every day, for which I am glad.

Wonder what the Conservative talkshow strategy will be to counter-attack? Usually they attack the credibility of the person who makes the accusation.

It should be noted that Karl Rove was fired from Bush seniors campaign in 1992 for leaking negative information to who......Novak.

Posted by: Mike C at October 1, 2003 11:03 AM | PERMALINK

Seems to me, whatever your polical association, you can find information and misinformation, quotes and misquotes, and misinterpretations read into quotes by "reading between the lines", to defend or break down particular proponents and opponents of any given ideology. So where does one go for the real truth? That was the question posed by Pilate of Jesus the Messiah before His crucifixion, Jesus stated "For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." and Pilate returned "What is the truth?" There are many people who quote and misquote Jesus, and take stands against Him without fully investigating all the facts in an unbiased manner, to find the truth, and will also approach other topics, such as this supposed leak in the same manner, coming from a biased position only further hampers any real progress to the truth, the truth that does not hold any political agenda, that cuts through all the bulls**t and adresses what is at the heart. If someone makes a statement, why does he not want to be named? Why not take a bold stance and let the chips fall wherever they may? What kind of cowards are these, if there is any truth to Mr Novak's insinuations? And is Robert Novak truly hiding his sources for noble reasons, or to stir up this kind of controversy, because if he truly felt there could be no harm in the outing of Plame, why all the secrecy?

Posted by: notnanarchist at October 1, 2003 12:55 PM | PERMALINK

I don't know if maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but if his wife's name (note her maiden name - the one she actually uses at the CIA) is on his own professional bio, then what's the leak? The article that Novak wrote takes the stance that Wilson was asked to go to Iraq because his wife wanted him to get the job. Which is quite likely the truth. His wife is NOT a CIA agent or operative functioning covertly anywhere in the world. She has an office job - as an analyst. Noone's life is endangered by Novak giving her name in his article. Noone could possibly "leak" something that is public information.

The whole thing is just stupid. Wilson HATES the Bush Administration and especially Karl Rove for whatever reasons.

In fact, Novak himself has said repeatedly that his information did NOT come from the White House.

a) Valerie Plame was an intel analyst, NOT a covert operative. Thus no cause for prosecution under the 1982 Intelligence Protection Act and actually, no crime;
b) If Joe Wilson was so concerned for his wife's safety, why'd he list her on his Web site as working for the Agency;
c) Why is the press not fact-checking and discovering points a and b above?

Answer to c, of course, is that national press coverage in this country is so slanted toward the left, it's vertical.

I'd like to know as much about Valerie Plame's backgrround as I can (I realize that will be limited). Some info appeared in a NYT article last yr. but that link is no longer free access. Does anyone know if that article or anything like it is availabel anywhere on the net (for free)?
