JUDGES DO THE TALKING TODAY....The Justice Department has granted "pre-clearance" for the recall election to the four counties that require it. That's one court case out of the way.
Meanwhile, in the ACLU case, the judge said he would require
"convincing evidence" that punch-card ballots were unfair and said he
would hand down a ruling by Wednesday. If he clears the election, I
think that's the final judicial hurdle (although the ACLU might appeal,
of course).

Hey Californians, why isn't the Democratic party DEMANDING that Davis
be included in the debates? If their principled stand is "No on the
recall," isn't that consistent? This east Coast Righty really thinks
Davis is getting the shaft from everybody, friend and foe alike.
One caveat, though: the Justice Department has granted preclearance for the recall only. It has not
granted preclearance for Proposition 54, saying it needs more time to
study the issue to see if there would be discriminatory effects to
holding an election on that proposition at this time. Which means the
four counties in question still can't send out absentee ballots.
If things are held up long enough to interfere with the reasonable
ability for overseas absentees to return ballots, wouldn't that be a
basis for challenging the election date on its own?
