THE GUARDIAN APOLOGIZES....I criticized the Guardian a few days ago for running both the (apparently) bogus Jack Straw/Colin Powell story and the Paul Wolfowitz translation. Today they explain themselves in a lengthy article. Here's the end: There
is no total satisfaction in these situations. The story should not have
run. In view of the significance of the statements attributed to Mr
Wolfowitz, rigorous checking should have taken place. The hazard of
translating remarks from German back into the English in which they were
originally made should have been apparent.
It concluded a week in which the Guardian apologised to the foreign
secretary, Jack Straw, for locating him at a meeting he did not attend.
It has not been the best of weeks.
The Guardian deserves
a lot of credit for printing this. American newspapers frequently
print corrections, but rarely do they explain exactly what happened,
what the reaction was, or express any genuine sense that they screwed
up. Kudos to the Guardian for doing all these things.

Spot-on, as they say.
Finally, a newspaper realizes that if you just take your medicine and
admit that you made a mistake and take responsibility, it all goes away
and people think better of you.
Now, if only American politicians would figure this out...
BFD, how are they going to correct the damage from other media
outlets picking up their story and running with it. And, more
importantly, WTF are they going to do to keep crap like this happening
again? From the looks of the article, nothing.
So Steve, never post anything in error yourself? If so, what [TF] did
you do about it to keep crap like that from happening again?
It's also worth noting that the Guardian owned up to their mistakes
quickly, unlike the News of the World, whose recent errors resulted in a
few immigrants being mistakenly jailed for eight months.
(can I take a quick cheap shot and point out that NoW is Murdoch-owned?)
I wonder if Steve feels as he states above when you point out the
hundreds of "misstatements" made about the Clintons, Al Gore, and many
other Democrats since 1992. I have yet to hear Rush take back anything
he's ever said, epsecially when it is proven to be incorrect!
Let he without editorial sin cast the first aspersion.
I think Steve's missed the point slightly. The linked Guardian
article was written by Ian Mayes, the paper's Reader's Editor. His
full-time job is to investigate complaints, write corrections, and work
out ways to prevent errors such as this from happening again. He also
has a weekly column to explain or justify any decisions. I don't think
he even answer's to the Editor, instead going directly to the managing
board.
It is interesting that the Guardian could not bring itself to apologize to Wolfowitz, et al. for the slanders it printed.

OK, Ben. I'll trade piss shots with you.
It's interesting that the Washington times never apologized to Al
Gore for spreading the slanders they printed about his alleged statement
that he created the Internet.
Quid Pro Quo
So Kevin, any hints or noise out there about the Straw/Colin
conversation? You give the impression you believe that, though the
meeting did not take place, the conversation might have.
No, I don't know anything about the conversation. I just thought it
was odd that the *only* thing the Guardian retracted was the meeting
itself, not the conversation. It seemed unusually carefully worded,
that's all.
