PSYCHOANALYSIS AS NEWS....The G8 summit is over, and the
ending statement called on Iran and North Korea to stop developing
nuclear arms. The G8 leaders also talked about exchange rates and a
bunch of other boring stuff.
But nobody cared about any of that, you see, because what really mattered was the body language between Bush, Chirac, Schroeder, and the others. For a complete navel-gazing roundup in pictures, check out this 10-photo spread from the BBC. Fascinating.

Kevin,
How about a caption contest?
Heh. I already have one going on based at OTB, based on the NYT version of this one.
Well, I'd say that still picture are a poor medium for examining body
language. I'd put more faith in this analysis if I assume that the BBC
expert was able to watch film of them and then picked the stills that
supported the conclusions drawn from seeing them move. The expert should
also be familiar with the normal everyday body language of each of
these men and have some idea of the norms within the various countries.
Some newscast or other I saw over the weekend did just that, Michael.
I don't recall the channel, though, and to be honest I can't say as I
paid attention, it seemed like an idiotic "story."
Isn't this kind of like Kremlinology for the new millenium?
This was maybe a year ago but I happened to catch something on the
Science Channel about the study of micro-expressions, extremely brief
involuntary emotional expressions that generally all but professional
actors, politicians and poker players can fully control (actors project
them and professional poker players hide them and/or are skilled at
reading them in others). Apparently this technique is being used by
several law enforcement agencies in Europe to pick up on inconsistencies
during interrogations (it requires a slow-mo tape playback to catch
most of them). The examples and studies they used were highly accurate
and quite telling.
There's also a big cultural difference here. The French are
seriously touchy-feely; Americans in general are not. The "arm around
the shoulder" says to me (Great Plains background) "This person is going
to try to sell me the Brooklyn Bridge". It's the stereotype gesture of
phony sincerity.
We'll see what happens. Bush isn't exactly cosmopolitan, after all.
The one with Puter and Schroeder: Puter says,
"He claims he looked me in the eye and could
see inside my soul - can you believe that bleep?"
All I can say is that despite all the heady formalities, that flag
hanging for the USA at the G8 Summit (or G7--Bush was actually formal
kicked-out after the Kyoto trashing), is basically representation of
lies that are bigger then this country itself and George W. Bush’s
visceral hate for the whole rest of the world. These other countries
will find it in their better interest not to partake of opportunities to
do business with the US and its inequitable principals. If nothing
else, Bush certainly jump-started the Euro and an international market
imagination that will preclude business connections with the US commerce
because it simply is not in other nations best interest to do business
with the two countries that present fraudulent evidence for clearly
their own selfish financial reasons. That FACT is that if the Iraqis
didn’t have oil in their country, they simply but truthfully would not
be free of Saddam right now, WMD or no WMD.
SO NOW that Bush has shown the rest of the world that the USA is
predominantly dishonest brokers in both political and business related
discourse, and the real appearance that most US citizen don’t care that
our president is international know for his shallow and corrupt dialogue
and intentions don’t seems to understand how economically unattractive
the US has become. Bush is our salesman/representative who is
presumably marketing US citizen intent therefore NO one should be
surprised that the rest of world isn’t interest in buying what we’re
peddling, politically or commercially. Paul D. Wolfowitz was TOLD to
get the US military out ot Saudi Arabia and that was not a mutual
agreement as Wolfowits lied to us about. The Saudi's followed their
request for US troop removal up by voiding a huge contract with western
oil companies and the Bush administration is desperately trying to
cover-up the damage they did the international business connections.
THIS is the long-term damage that is by far worse that this claim by Krugman: “
If that claim was fraudulent, the selling of the war is arguably the
worst scandal in American political history — worse than Watergate,
worse than Iran-contra. Indeed, the idea that we were deceived into war
makes many commentators so uncomfortable that they refuse to admit the
possibility.
First of all the Iraq war wasn’t arguably the “worst fraudulent
selling of a war” since Vietnam by comparison was THE worst selling of a
fraudulent war to date. Rather it is the obvious international lie
that is the worst scandal in American political history and that which
has the ability to bring a prosperous nations to it’s economic knees.
