May 30, 2003 PRIVACY....Kenneth Adelman is a millionaire environmental activist who takes pictures of the California coast from a helicopter. His pictures are frequently used to document illegal activity, and a few years ago he embarked on a mission to photograph the entire coast in order to have a permanent record of what the shoreline looks like today in case it's needed in a court case later. Of the 12,000 pictures he has taken, one is of Barbra Streisand's house, which is on the coast in Malibu. So she's suing him for invasion of privacy. Result: the picture of her house is printed in the LA Times and seen by about a million people. I'm sure it will be on the local news tonight as well. As to a more efficient means of getting pictures, the helicopter may be it, with the ability to hover and get to the spot needed for the best pic. As a commentator on the environment, science, politics, culture... he's a terrific sports writer. Caveat: I'm not naturally disposed to be nice to Mr. Easterbrook, as I remember him publishing a "Space Shuttle: Threat or Menace?" column in Time not more than 72 hours after Columbia broke up. Given the goal of Edelman's project, Streisand's position seems to be "yes to every environmentalist project you can think of, but not in my back yard". She's a walking definition of hypocrisy with a check book. As to the self-defeating nature of this lawsuit, I always thought that the most likely explanation for those those mis-spelled faxes to George Bush was that she routinely throws a tantrum and dismisses anyone who attempts to give her rational advice. Breen: I seem to recall Easterbrook's article on the shuttle breakup came about because he had written an article in the early 1980's about the dangers presented by the craft as well as its huge cost. The article was put up in a couple of places on the web right after the accident, and I suspect that that was a large part of the impetus behind the new article. It was probably inappropriate to publish something so soon, but not entirely unexpected, given his long-standing opposition to the shuttle program. For one thing, shuttle tragedies are just about the only time you can get most of the country interested in discussing the shuttle program. Also, saying you shouldn't criticize the shuttle program three days after the accident is a lot like saying you can't criticize a war while it is going on. So long as Easterbrook didn't criticize the astronauts themselves, I have no problem with it. Of course, my opinion here would carry more weight if I supported the space shuttle, but unfortunately I don't. Donald: Coming from someone who is a supporter of the shuttle program, there are two threads to this that I've seen to the "sin:" 1) It sort of lacks decorum to jump right in and start screaming about how the shuttle should be stopped, etc. This doesn't stop most people of course, but as a rule most people don't get Op-Ed space in Time. This is obviously a personal issue for those affected, therefore subject to variation. 2) Easterbrook's criticism is for the wrong reason. I dearly love the space shuttle and I'm unashamed to admit it, but I acknowledge that the vehicle is flawed in a lot of ways. It's too big, it's too heavy and it was designed more to justify NASA's continued full-sale operations after the Johnson and Nixon budget cuts than as a spacecraft. Sooner or later the shuttle's got to be replaced, and the replacement - while bowing to the various pressure groups that are always connected to NASA - will be an overall better vehicle. Easterbrook doesn't condemn the shuttle for these things. Instead, he's condemning it for being unsafe. For the work that the space shuttle does, and for the stresses it gets put through, the shuttle is a damn safe vehicle. Shuttles can, and have, survived things that would force an extremely dangerous abort in Soyuz or Shenzhou ships. There will always be situations, though, where even the safest aircraft will fail and kill everybody - Columbia getting a burnthrough at 200,000 feet is like a 747 losing a wing at 30,000 feet; no matter what, it's going to be a bad day for the people on that plane. Shutting down the shuttle program to make way for a more efficient method of space travel makes sense. Shutting it down because Gregg Easterbrook doesn't think it has enough mommy systems onboard to ensure 100% reliability and safety through the entire mission is ludicrous. (Aside to Kevin: Sorry to have hijacked this comment thread to rant about Easterbrook and Columbia. I'm done now. Really.) Posted by: S.M.
