May 18, 2003 BOOKS....Every once in a while I read a really spectacular
book. Not just a good book, but something that really knocks me flat.
So far in my life there have been five of these books. Here they are,
along with the year I read them:
This isn't a list of every book I've ever liked, of course (that list is here,
if you're interested, although it hasn't been updated for a few years),
but these are the ones that have really stood out. Some observations:

I'm 300 pages in and just barely over a quarter of the way through) Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, and it's starting to get very interesting. It's no Crime and Punishment, but what is? I never thought an author could tell the same story twice and still have it be fascinating. (And I don't mean a formuala, Card actually told the same story from the point of view of another character.) Have you read Stephen Dondaldson's 'Gap' series about salespeople at the giant clothing chain? Actually it is a great sci-fi series, VERY dark but well worth it. If you want a good modern fantasy, Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' is excellent. If you find your next great book, let us know. I need something really good to read. I still try from year to year, hoping it's a matter of maturity or wisdom, but it still remains a book I cannot stand. Posted by: Kenneth G. Cavness at May 18, 2003 12:57 PM | PERMALINKI've always been much more partial to 'Brothers Karamazov' than to C&P -- mostly because of the vividness of the characters and the fact that the ending is more in line with the rest of the book. Then again, it suffers from a bit more plodding-ness, or rather (to be more charitable) stands in need of more interpretation. By far the best 'difficult' book I've ever read, though. If you liked The Quincunx, you might also try Palliser's more recent The Unburied. The ne plus ultra of neo-Victorian fiction, though, is still A. S. Byatt's Possession. (The recent film version caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth on VICTORIA-L.) Those being James Jones' From Here to Eternity and Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. O'Brien's work is amazing, and Jones' characters just get under your skin. There are some innately homophobic parts in From Here to Eternity but then in was written in the late 1940's and involves an aspect of Army life that nobody at the time would dare associate with our brave soldiers. In fact, I doubt anyone these days would do so either. I read an interview with Palliser where he said there are three "solutions" to the mysteries of the Quincunx that he knows of - the solution that John hits upon and that motivates his vengeance, the second solution that the reader is supposed to surmise as he/she reads the book, and a third solution that someone else figured out and sent to Palliser, which also fits the facts of the book. Also worth reading (and slightly reminiscent of Palliser)in their obliqueness) is Gene Wolfe's "New Sun" series. Or China Mieville's "Perdido Street Station" - perhaps the most exciting f/sf novel of the last five years. Or for sheer good fun, George R.R.Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series - starting with "A Game of Thrones." Well written and plotted, and bloody addictive - it's about as good as straightforward fantasy epics can get. Kevin - If you loved the Foundation trilogy, and Eon, and Infinte Jest... if you love long complex sci-fi works like Dune, why aren't you reading Gene Wolfe? Esp the Fifth Head of Cerebus and the Urth (Book of the New Sun) works, beginning with Shadow of the Torturer. Fantastic. And for fully a realized sci-fi world, rich with ideas and complex interweaving cultures on a future earth (and beyond), seek out "On My Way to Paradise" by Dave Wolverton. One of the best, most complex and fully rendered works of sci-fi ever, simply amazing. I can't recommend this book highly enough, it is probably the best sci-fi books i have ever read...I keep buying it and lending it out and never getting it back. Out of print but they have it at Amazon. Both American Gods and Neverwhere are pretty much required reading. Have you read Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep? (He also wrote a companion book, a sort of prequel called A Deepness in the Sky). Deep is pretty good. If you've never read them, Good Omens and Small Gods for a bit more light-hearted reading. Posted by: Morat at May 18, 2003 05:34 PM | PERMALINKIf you haven't read Douglas Adams' books, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the other 4 in the trilogy. Those should be your next ones, no matter what anyone else says. You get references to them nearly everywhere you go, if not more than that. They're sci-fi, absolutely hilarious, and they also have some very deep philosophy in them. After that, you should read Terry Pratchett's, which are similar to Adams', but are fantasy, and while the philosophy isn't as deep, it's both more noticable and covers a wider range of topics. The first in the series is Discworld, which is also where they're all set. (Discworld is a flat, circular world, sitting on the back of four elephants, which are standing on the back of Great A'Tuan (sp?), a giant turtle.) And finally, the best 8 books in the universe are the two-and-two-thirds trilogies so far written by Robin Hobb. These are fantasy, and are unlike any other books in existance. I could swear she (the author) is just a vessel through which some higher being is writing. Really. Read them. Also, if you happen to like young adult books, Tamora Pierce's Quartets are good, as are Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. Ditto for Philip Pullman's Golden Compass trilogy. If you're looking for a non-fiction loop-de-loop, try And the Band Played On, the late Randy Shilts's account of the early years of AIDS. I only just finished it, some 15 years late, but it was absolutely fantastic. And surprisingly relevant, even beyond the HIV crisis. Banks is worth looking into, if only for his creation of a universe with warships called "Ultimate Ship the Second", "A Frank Exchange of Views", and "Xenophobe". is very good too, also insane philosophical scifi comedy. When it comes to books I'm a middle-weight at best, but my most recent eye-opener book was The Farfarers, Before the Norse by Farley Mowat. But if you are ready for a knocked-on-your-ass, change your life book, it is Sarah Powers "A Problem from Hell: Genocide in the 20th C." It caused me to change my mind, my priorities, my politics and my tithing. It is even more harrowing than Randy Shilts' "And the Band Played On" recommended by another poster, which is an Important Book. Well, I've read most of the sf books people are recommending, but the book which knocked me on my ass this year has been STORIES OF YOUR LIFE AND OTHERS by Ted Chiang. Turns my brain inside out. I have to say though that I quit reading Covenant after the first book. I wanted to murder him. Or at least slap him around and tell him to, "Just get on with it!" An amazing and chilling book.) I can't actually come up with a top-ten, but here are the first ten memorable books that sprang to mind: The rise and fall of the third reich by William Shirer I love David Eddings as well - I have every book of his. Check out "The Losers" if you haven't already - great general fiction by him, and much different than his fantasy writing. Byatt (better than possession), plenty of fun stuff by Robertson Davies, and anything by Margaret Atwood. Good stores, none the less, and his Sparhawk novels are a bit darker. For fantasy, I'd recommend the Song of Ice and Fire series, the Tad William's Memory, Sorrow and Thorn books, and, as I mentioned before Neverwhere and anything Pratchett. Posted by: Henry Farrell at May 18, 2003 10:42 PM | PERMALINKNovels: you've probably heard of Sophie's World by Jöstein Gaarder, and it's all it's cracked up to be, both a novel and a history of philosophy. If you're like me and whenever you read a fiction book you feel a twinge that tells you you're wasting your time, this is a great book to read. The Ruined Map by Kobo Abe is a haunting and exciting detective story in 1960s Tokyo; barely anything really happens in the plot, which adds to its interesting nature. Also, try reading one of the weird, introspective thrillers written early in Michael Innes' career before he settled into writing the Sir John Appleby mysteries. The Paper Thunderbolt and Death By Water are fascinating and inexplicably exciting novels. Hare Sitting Up is a more conventional scientist-spy novel, but has a great title. The Great Train Robbery is by far my favorite Michael Crichton book, and it's incredibly accurate about Victorian London. If you like Youngblood Hawke you should like Marjorie Morningstar by Wouk. A couple non-fiction books that really amazed me were The Third Chimpanzee by Jared Diamond; Sex on the Brain: The Biological Differences Between Men There's a book called The Human Web by someone or other that sounds like it would appeal to anyone who liked Guns, Germs and Steel but got somewhat tired of the focus on the crops of Papua New Guinea. Everybody's favorite sports book should be Manute: The Center of Two Worlds by Leigh Montville. Manute Bol is an absolutely amazing character. Still, d.g.n.d.e. and all that, so here's a List of Things You Should Read If You Haven't Already (That Aren't Science-Fiction but Might Appeal To You if You Like That Sort of Thing). I imagine you'll have read most of these, but perhaps there will be one or two things you haven't got to yet. Molloy, Samuel Beckett Nothing even remotely reminiscent of science fiction in a couple of those, esp. Headlong; but as I've recently re-read that and liked it even better than I'd remembered doing, I put it in the list anyway. Some of your other readers have recommended Pale Fire and I can only concur. Mr Nielsen Hayden recommends O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series. He's right, of course. This series has an added bonus for science fiction fans. As you read these books, you'll very quickly recognise them as the source from which Niven and Pournelle swiped shamelessly for The Mote in God's Eye. N. and P. seem to have thought that putting Nelson's navy in outer space and throwing in some three-armed aliens with bad hormonal problems was an adequate substitute for, well, for everything that makes O'Brian worth reading. They were wrong. Finally, for a bit of fun, have a look at the novel to which I alluded in the first paragraph, Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim. Recently--try W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz. (I should warn you--I didn't get to the end of the first paragraph till the second day I was reading it.) And I will recommend The Transit of Venus, by Shirley Hazzard, till I am blue in the face. Le Guin. She's the best. Connie Willis is great too, although her most recent book (Passage) was very disappointing. I also recommend Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn. For more not sci-fi, one of the most beautiful books I've ever read is The Street of Crocodiles, by Bruno Schulz. And Thersites is absolutely correct, Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman is brilliant and just sickenly funny. I stumbled upon a CSPAN Booknotes broadcast of a wonderful speech she gave at the Riverside Church in NYC earlier this month. It was passionate, eloquent, witty and erudite. Unfortunately (from the perspective of our conservative friends) it was anti-war, anti-empirialism, anti-Bush. She had nothing good to say about either the US government or the Indian government (and her condemnation of US Presidents includes the Democratic hero, JFK, specifically for supporting Saddam Hussein way back in '63). I don't consider her comments to be anti-American, though. If you're in the mood for a good rousing leftist rant, ">read her speech. There's nothing wrong with obnoxious protagonists, but only so long as the author doesn't act as if the reader is supposed to like them. Thomas Covenant went around muttering "leper outcast unclean" so incessantly that it'd drive one batty, and as for those Wiggin kids, I wanted to feed every one of them to wolves. Along with their author. I don't remember which Orson Scott Card received a book review somewhere which consisted solely of a comparative study of the succeptibility of the hardcover and galley proof editions to attack by a chainsaw, but anybody who thinks that "everybody loves 'Ender's Game'" sure doesn't get out much. A couple that I haven't seen mentioned yet but which knocked my particular brand of socks off: Gore Vidal's "Kalki" - Michael Talbot's "The Holographic Universe" - And along the lines of "Infinite Jest," Pynchon, Richard Powers, and James Joyce, tracking down Alexander Theroux's "Darconville's Cat" will certainly be worth the effort. Also, has anyone mentioned Theodore Sturgeon's "More Than Human"? It is among the most beautifully written of all sci-fi novels, and has one of the greatest opening paragraphs in all of American literature, as far as I'm concerned. Good books (classics): Dante's Inferno (and the rest of the Divine Comedy. Ciardi, Hollander, or Pinsky translations. Iliad & Odyssey. (Fagel translation). Tacitus & Suetonius's histories. Njal's Tale (Icelandic Saga - murders, followed by lawsuits, followed by more murder, followed by more lawsuits, followed by more murder). SF/Fantasy: Iain Banks "Culture" novels (and his mainstream novels like "The Wasp Factory" and "The Bridge"), George R. Martins "Song of Ice & Fire", Vinge, LeGuin, Gene Wolfe, most Silverberg. Found the first of "Song of Ice and Fire" series in the soon to be tossed pile at the library. I figuerd 1,000 pages for a quarter was a deal I could not pass. I am now addicted. Have also cursed a neighbor and brother in law with the addiction. Waiting for book four. It is mindless R rated fantasy, but what better way to forget about Bush? Since I never read any other fantasy (other than C. S. Lewis' "Seven Tales of Narnia" as a kid) I don't know how it measures up to the others in the genre. But agree with other posters - worth reading. Now, I read his stuff in the aftermath of a nasty breakup so I quite enjoyed the "seething anger and despair over mistreatment by evil women" schtick, but... Science fact, though, is a lot weirder and more wonderful than anything dreamt up by Frank Herbert and his like. So try the book I never tire of plugging, Dr Tatiana's Sex Advice For All Creation by Olivia Judson. If you like that sort of thing, have a look at Steve Jones's Y: The Descent of Men, whose first chapter has what I believe the best opening sentence ever written.
